My first home - Concept to completion part 1 (Exterior)steemCreated with Sketch.

UPDATE! I've posted part 2! It can be found in the link below.
My first home - Concept to completion part 2 (Interior)

Have you ever had the chance to build a home from the ground up?

Over the past few years I was lucky enough to have the chance to build my first home (beside my siblings). The process was not easy, the cost was not cheap but at the end of the day it was worth it.

Since this was a family project and not a single person had any experience building homes, project managing, or designing we had to enlist the help of professionals. We visited several show homes of local home builders but ultimately ended up with a company named Alloy Homes.

If anyone has built a home, they would know that it is not as easy as it seems. Especially since this was a custom home I had the ability to select just about anything. I did have guidance from the designer but I was always hesitant of choosing something incorrectly. I had so many questions that I needed answers for.

Do I need double or triple pane windows?
What kind of siding should be used?
What color stucco?
Closed or open riser stairs?
Carpet in the basement and rooms?
What color cabinets should I get?
Which appliances?

and the list goes on and on and on. Luckily we live in a time where you can find answers to just about anything with a simple google search. So that’s what I did.

One resource I found myself using and highly recommend is a website called Houzz. You can sort the pictures by style and save the ones that you like. The best thing you can do when building a home is have pictures of things that you like. This will help you at all stages.

It would be hard to cover the process from start to finish, and to be honest I think I would bore you to death. But I would be more than happy to answer any questions that anyone might have just leave a reply below.

Now to the fun stuff. I’ll take you through the building process with pictures!

A conceptual sketch of the building

2.JPG

The first rendering, unfortunately due to fire code we were unable to have a 4th floor with a balcony without having a cement staircase. Which is super expensive.

3.JPG
A birds eye view rendering with the 4th floor removed.

This is where it started to get exciting. To see the ground being excavated and the foundation about to be poured.
4.JPG

5.JPG

Right after the foundation was poured the framing started. This was probably the quickest part of the whole build. One day I stopped by the site and there was nothing framed, a few days later 2 floors were framed. Then the third.

8.JPG

Once the house was framed and the roof was on. The stucco and hardie board siding was applied.

And here is the finished product. These pictures were taken by Marie-Helene Bilodeau for Alloy to submit to the Canadian Home Builders Association Awards, which we later won the Best Multi Family Project in Canada over 1500 square feet for 2017.

Really exciting - I've always wanted to do this. thanks for sharing the photos of before, during and after - really inspiring

I wish I was using Steemit when this project started. I would have known what angles to take the pictures from and I think I would have done it weekly so you can see real progress. I'm still glad you liked it! Thank you!

So no concrete was used except for foundation?? In India we never use wood for framing. Too risky even though it's cheap.

Concrete was only used for the foundation, it's pretty normal around here for that. I would say 99.9% of houses are framed with wood here in Calgary. We were thinking about putting concrete party walls up but then it would cost way too much money and cut into the square footage of the homes.

also in continental Europe, bricks, steel and concrete are used for the most buildings, wood is used rather seldom

That is very interesting, almost all the houses in NA have wood frames I believe. I just posted part 2! Check it out if you get a chance.

Nice project ! Congrats to you :)

Thanks !

The place looks great. Very modern, which I personally like. But the really eye-catching features are the windows and lighting. They created some great lines and from the pictures it seems as if they carry all the way through the interior of the house. Great work, thanks for posting your pictures.

This architecture is amazing would definitely have my future home build by your team!! Love the start -finish photos A+++

Thank you! I’ll be posting some interior shots early next week. I hope you will enjoy that as well!

Great design.. Did you go solar on anything.. Looks like you could benefit there?

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Unfortunately I did not go solar on anything. Now that I have a few miners in my house I wish I did after the last electricity bill.

I did solar water heating for a few years.. The people would tell me about the differances in their bills all the time .. Even just going solar water would lower your electric bill

What’s the cost of something like that? I’ve honestly never looked into pricing but I know my roof would be the perfect place for some panels.

Average water system cost around 2000 dollars

Nice piece of work there Jimmy. Your blog said best over 1500 SQ FT. , what is the square of the project? Is the footage roughly the same for each unit?
Just a curious old man wondering ,
I up-voted your work because it deserves it and I hated to see it lingering on 99 so you have officially hit the 100 mark.
Take care,
@sultnpapper

Thank you! The square footage of each unit (there is 3) is roughly 2100 give or take 50 sq ft. Thank you for the up vote!! It’s greatly appreciated.

Well, given real estate is kind of my thing. I love this post. Congrats bro! I have done major renovations but never a build from scratch. Cool deal, looks awesome.

Thank you! Do you have any posts of your renovations? I’d love to have a look.

Sadly no, did them all well before I discovered steemit and lost most of the pics on a old machine. Back up your hard drive is a lesson I learned...ugh.

I’m finding the same issue. I just joined Steemit just under 2 weeks ago and I wish I had taken pictures better in the past, or taken pictures at all. What’s important is that I know now :)

The house looks really good and I enjoyed looking on those constructions and details photos. :)

Thanks! I hope part 2 will be just as good for you :)

That turned out really lovely. I like the way added privacy was thoughtfully designed into the buildings without making it obvious.

I used to like to build homes as a hobby, but I'd use an old video game & this is definitely a style I gravitate towards. Those windows. 😍

The windows are awesome to have to look at, but when it came to time to select blinds for that size I was shocked.... haha. Thanks for looking!

Wow.. nice concept building @jimmylin. Great work..

Thanks, the design was by Alloy.

Great project, beautiful house. Building a house and being truly involved it's a good lesson that choosing and tanking decisions it's not always so easy as it seems, more often very tedious. But now you can fully enjoy!
Thanks for sharing.

We actually just had our 1 year walk through a few weeks ago and so far so good. There were only a few selections I made that I sort of regret now, or a window positioned incorrectly. Nothing deal breaking, still loving the home.

This looks almost like my dream house. Love the lines, reminds me a bit of Bauhaus.

Thank you!

Great design. Wish you had some pictures of the inside as well. I too used Houzz to help me when we were designing our house. It is an amazing website. Congrats on your awards for architecture in multi family living. 🐓🐓

Thanks! I'm actually working on part 2, pictures of the inside. I was not expecting the post to have so many people viewing lol. Houzz is awesome, do you have any pictures of your home?

Yes, I designed a small cracker cabin as we live in Florida. It is a new form of the original style . We went for comfort convience and efficiency. 572 square feet. Plus a screened in front porch. Houzz gave me a lot of ideas about building materials, lighting and finishes. Some of my photos are on my earlier posts. Looking forward to your next post. Thanks for stopping by. 🐓🐓

I just posted part 2 if you're interested :D

Wow....
Its one thing to start a project and another to complete it. Congrats
I must say thats an extremely amazing piece you have developed there and i cant wait to view the interior. I especially love the night view. The lighting used just perfects it.
Down here in Nigeria you rarely get to see houses made of wood. In fact i'm not even sure the authorities would let you raise it. Risk and all...
Kudos

I'll have a blog posted on the interior as soon as I can! I would say early next week. Thanks for the kind words.

Well done!
I like this style,
the last two shots are awesomes!

Yes they were much better than the photos I took with my cell phone. I also think the builder wanted nice photos to submit to the Canadian Home Builders Association haha.

@jimmylin
Your publications are really beautiful I've checked most of them and found them amazing you're really worth it all thanks for sharing I hope to be like you in the future I work with all my efforts and perfection of God

Thank you for your kind words! I'm still new to Steemit and blogging in general. This is my first go at this sort of stuff. I'm glad you are liking it.

Very beautiful home, I like so much big windows and modern architecture. I know it is truly not cheap. And I like too this website Houzz, there are very many great pictures and ideas.

Thank you!

man, beautiful home, but what a fat middle finger to the neighbors!

Lol! A lot of the houses in the area are being re-developed I don't think there was any concern. At first we thought there might be given the height of the building but no one has complained :)

Congratulations @jimmylin!
Your post was mentioned in the hit parade in the following category:

  • Pending payout - Ranked 8 with $ 244,78

Cool!

It looks great. I would love to live in it. I love the simplicity and those big windows. Well done!

Thank you! I just posted part 2, interior shots!

interesting, the fundament is made completely different than in Europe, in Europe they usually start with a single sole plate

That is interesting and I was hoping people would reply with how things are done in other countries. It’s quite interesting as what’s normal to me is completely unordinary in other parts of the world.

Good post, I am a photographer, it passes for my blog and sees my content, I hope that it should be of your taste, you have my vote :D greetings

I will definitely check out your photos. I saw a few and I love the black and white. I just posted part 2, check it out if you get a chance :)

Congratulations! It must have been an exciting journey from concept to an actual Home. Whatever the angles of taking pictures, your home looks beautiful. Thanks for sharing your life experience.

Thanks! I just posted an interior blog if you're interested!

Thank you! I just posted part 2 I hope you will check it out.

My God

I hope that was a good "My God"

Fo Show

I put up part 2 a few hours ago, check it out if you get a chance :)

Fucking nice. I am looking to buy in USA pa and it’s impossible to get a modern house. Everything here is plastic, small windows and lets make it look like a Disney/plastic version of something that looks like it was made 300years ago.

Love this place!

Lol! That sounds awful... especially the plastic part. I just posted part 2 I hope you have the chance to check it out!

sorry, I just support you with a joke comment. but I think your post is. . . .

lol! thanks, I just put up part 2 a few hours ago!

Congratulations @jimmylin for winning the award, indeed this building is really nice and deserves it .... Making a building project done isn't an easy task bro! Kudos to you for sharing this beautiful building with us here

Thanks for the kind words
