Life is for Living

Hi, my name is Joanna and, in a bid take back control of what makes me happy, I have decided to live off grid, deep in the Spanish countryside. I do have mains water but all of my electricity comes from solar panels (or the generator on cloudy days!) and gas bottles provide both water heating and the ability to cook. I shop in bulk once a week and then, quite often, it's only my partner that I see from day to day.

I have consciously decided to take myself away from the daily pressures that a consumer society places on both individuals and families so I don't watch television (with its associated advertising culture) nor do I read a daily paper or magazines

The result so far? I read more, I listen to more music and podcasts, I learn more and I have more free time to spend with my partner and my dog.

I will post about my daily life, about living off grid and share the photos I take. My aim is to inspire others and generally try to make the world a happier place.

Is that actually the background you see out of your house? If so, that's insane.

I'm curious how you feel about watching ad-free television, because some cable channels don't have that.

But yes, it's always a question of how to spend one's time, and I myself have been fighting recently with how much easier it is to spend time consuming others' content than creating my own. If anything, me joining Steemit is to help move me to create more once again.

And welcome! :3

Hi, yeah, it actually is :-) I know I am lucky. I will post some other photographs shortly but basically, the house sits surrounded by mountains like that. The only road I can see is the track leading away from the house. And, you are right about spending time doing things that you want to do. I feel much more in control of my life, more relaxed, happier and our relationship has improved.

And watching ad free tv isn't so hard. We do have a screen but usually watch box sets or movies.

And thanks for the welcome; it's great to be here.

Glad to hear you're doing better, I know how hard the struggle can be. I mean, I'm living in the world, so I'm struggling.

And man, that environment looks amazing.

This is very cool, do you still have internet in your house? I recently stopped watching TV also and so far found I feel more then ever like I have time to learn new things!

Yeah, we do have the internet via a microwave repeater that is up on one of the mountains; has to be line of sight. To be fair, we have most things although there are some restrictions. For example, I can't use a hairdryer because it's 2000 watts but I am definitely willing to give that up to live where I do!

We also have a 4G router via Movistar which gives us a separate 20Meg download and 1Meg upload connection :-).

Hey Joanna! Welcome to Steemit. I also just arrived last night. It sounds like we have many parallels as far as our life values are concerned. I'll be following you, and I'm looking forward to potentially sharing with you.

Hi Carol-anne; thanks for your comments and I hope we can interact in the future. I am getting sick of Facebook and Steemit just seems so fresh in comparison. I hope you are having a great day.

Welcome to Steemit, Joanna. Living off-grid, using solar power and gas bottles. Wow! That is extreme. I would really love to read some more from you. That is a beautiful picture that you have shared with us. Is it somewhere close to where you live?

Hi, That is the view from the gardens at the back of the house. You can see the house itself on my diary blog that I just posted. I will post loads more photos because it really is such a beautiful location :-)

It is really very beautiful. I will check it out. Thank you for letting me know. :)
