Mouth ulcers, common lesion that affect most people (17% at least once in their life).they develop at the interne surface of the mouth, superficial, small and painful, so painful when eating and talking, also annoying as they make you hold your saliva.
As they are not caused by infectious, they aren’t contagious, the pain could last 2 to 5 days, regenerating the mucosa may last 1 to 3 weeks without any scarring. The real causes are determined yet, but some factors are incriminated, the hereditary the most, in addition to:
-All kind of injuries: dental prosthesis, accidental bite, hard brushing, sleeping on sharp teeth...
-Toothpastes mouth and rinses that contain sodium lauryl sulfate, unfortunately most of toothpastes contain it, especially when lack of washing.
-Acidic foods like strawberries, citrus, and pineapples, and other sensitive foods like chocolate, coffee, walnut, cheese, conservative....
-Dusted food, cold drink following hot or spicy meals.
-Lack of essential vitamins, especially B-12, zinc, folate, and iron
-Hormonal changes during menstruation circle.
-Stress and disordered sleep.
They also could be a sign of serious such Celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease; diabetes mellitus, Behcet’s disease. You should consult a doctor if they associated with other signs such diarrhea, fever or abnormally extending; persisting more than three weeks, new mouth ulcers before the old ones heal.
Treatment and prevention:
If you figured the cause, try to avoid it, for the pain and to accelerate the recovery try using:
a rinse of saltwater and bicarbonate.
placing milk of magnesia on the mouth ulcer.
