Dreams are an irreplaceable part of what it means to be human. That is why they are reflected in history, mythology and religion. But are dreams an important part of our existence or do they really transcend the anecdotal?
We spend a third of our life sleeping. However, we only dream of bursts of a few minutes. If we calculate an average, a length of our life we dream for six whole years. During this process, the brain will be activated almost in its entirety so that the blood flow in the same sea is double that needed during the waking state. Only part of the brain stops working while we sleep: the logical center. That is why dreams acquire, often, nuances of unreality. In addition, in order not to externalize our dreams, the brain sends signals to the spinal cord paralyzing our limbs temporarily. The only thing that moves when we dream, what happens during the phase known as REM, are our eyes, which move in a manner consistent with our activity in the dream.
An important function that fulfills our brain during sleep is to discard and select the memories. That is why, the day after having studied, remembering better the matter that we did not spend the whole night looking down and slept the necessary time. It is necessary, therefore, to sleep well so that we have studied it remain in our memory the next day.
