Learning Chess — Chess Pieces (Part 2)

in life •  7 years ago  (edited)

This part of the learning Chess series will be introducing the chess pieces. I will be showing various styles of of real life chess pieces and also the style we are going to use. The style we are using is a 2D design referred to as the classic pieces design. The classic pieces design are most common among chess instructors. Therefore, I deemed it practical to get used to the classical design of the chess pieces.

Furthermore, I will indicate the value of a chess piece by assigning a number ranging from 1 to 6, with 1 being the lowest value and 6 the highest. The value of a chess piece in this series should serve as a guide, and should therefore not be taken too literal. The value of a piece is somewhat objective but mostly subjective. With value we mean in this context, how much freedom a chess piece has on the board. As an beginner it is useful to start with the valuation guide in mind. However, as one gets better the value of a piece should mostly be indicated by its position on the board relative to your other pieces and the pieces of your opponent. That is to say, should be indicated by your strategy and tactics.

Amount of pieces
Each player starts with 16 pieces, one player starts with the white pieces another with the black pieces. It is regarded that white has the advantage, because a player having the white pieces, always gets to set the first move. Thus gaining strategical advantage. Each player starts with: 1 King, 1 Queen, 2 Bishops, 2 Knights, 2 Rooks, 8 Pawns:

Valuation of pieces

Bellow is a recap of the amount of pieces each player starts with, including their value, names and the designs we are going to use. The names will be indicated by black text, the amount by orange text, the value by blue text. Furthermore, the design we are going to use is located beneath its correspondent piece.

Next we will discuss the basic chess rules, which means that we are going to discuss how the pieces move on the board. The rules of chess are embedded in the movement of the pieces.
