Many service dogs complete their training and go on to have fulfilling careers. But for those that don't, there could be many reasons why. Some of those include being too nervous, not having enough drive, or having an incompatible personality.
For these dogs, they did not pass because they were considered "too nice." So airport TSA's have now branched out to an adoption program for all of these mutts that were under qualified for the drug-sniffing business.
The breeds available include German Shorthaired Pointers, Labrador retrievers, German shepherds, and Belgian Malinois.
Other organizations also work to find good homes for service dogs. For example, Mission K9 searches out homes for retired serve dogs to live out the rest of their days.
And Freedom Service Dogs of America adopts out any dogs that cannot complete their training due to things like being too distracted or scared, or having physical handicaps.
Disclaimer: Adoption fees can be several hundred dollars in some cases.
