Many people want to escape their jobs.
Many people aren't sure how,
Usually the starting point is to figure out your Niche!
Do you want to write about skin?
Do you want to draw Panda bears?
it's important to pick something that is profitable and interesting to you.
If you hate golfing, Don't start blogging about golf, because you THINK it will make you money.
Focus on Monetization
What is it that your thinking about revolving your business around?! You can select all kinds of things
self-improvement, publishing, coding, computer, gimp, pandas, food,
Whatever you want, But you need to figure out HOW much people are interested in the subject.
- You also need to gauge how useful that topic is.
If everyone is blogging about Pandas, It may be hard for your blog to rank. But if no one talks about the Panda's diet, But a Pandas diet is something in high demand, You have yourself a niche.
How do I gauge the profitability of my niche?
One way is to jump on Google. And type in your desired Niche. We'll use Pandas for example.
- What type of search results do you get?
- Are these huge big businesses, Like Walmart and Amazon? Or smaller ones. Like personal blogs?
With Pandas: I see music related to Pandas, ( a band maybe), National Geographic, Slate, Panda Express.
These are BIG business. But as you can see I got a mix of - Food
- Music
- then information about Pandas.
There isn't a whole heck of a lot of information about Pandas on the front page.
This could easily mean, - People don't give a shit about panda bears
- There isn't much info out there on Pandas (which may give you a great niche)
You also want to do research using
- Google Keyword Planner
- And other keyword search engines.
I like to use Merchant words, Although Merchant words are gauged more towards products on Amazon, it can be a somewhat helpful choice for Google searches too. Remember, You need to "diversify" your income. So you need multiple ways to make money off the niche of your choosing.
So using Merchant words Typing in Pandas I got...
panda express 2,475,100 Grocery
manga panda 624,100 Apps & Games
red panda 585,100 Home & Kitchen
panda movies 545,100 Trade-In
kung fu panda 500,100
Based on this information, people don't seem to want to learn about Pandas as an animal. They seem more interested in the restaurant, Or the movies.
Another way to check...
Go on Amazon.com
Look up Kindle books related to your niche, Now click on those books and look at their BSR, (Best Seller Ranking)
- Are they selling?
Heres something to keep in mind. This is just an average. - 100,000 means they sell one copy per day.
- 40,000 usually means around five copies
- 10,000 about ten copies
- 5,000 about 20 copies.
Of course, this all depends on the pricing, the category the author chose, etc. But you usually want a ranking better than 100,000 if possible.
Now check a bunch of books, Sure some of the books may be seasonal. But you want to aim for a niche that is profitable year round.
When I search for Panda Bear books, I get a lot of.
- Children books
- One national geographic book.
What is selling?
National Geographic book
Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #529,721 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)
Kid books
Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #396,454 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)
Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #199,123 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)
As you can see kid books featuring cute panda bears seem to be doing better, But not the greatest. I could have done more research to determine if Panda bears are the best niche to be in. But based on my initial review, panda bears may not be the best pick.
It's important to do a lot of research on a subject before you pick your niche. Choosing the wrong niche can sometimes cause you to have to start your business back over from scratch.
It's also good to pick a niche that can be slightly altered over time. If your niche is fishing, If fishing isn't generating enough money, you may be able to expand a bit to more outdoorsy activities. Or even outdoorsy gear. That way you'll be covered for years,
Know who your audience is
You need to keep in mind who is buying your products.
For adult coloring books, Many mothers, and older women are buying them. So when I make my books, I try to think of what they'd enjoy. There is also a younger audience coloring too; That is why I made my swear word books.
Don't be afraid to do a lot of research in order to pick the best niche for you, It's the difference between being very successful and failing your business.

Good info. Focusing on a niche with a larger enough demographic is key. Then once success is found there one can look to expand.

Hi, I recently started to work as a curator for the @steemtrail project, taking care of the “business” category. I would suggest to make the first tag of your post (also known as main tag) “business” if you want your post to be considered for submission in that category. As more moderators will join in, there will also be subcategories, like “business/trading”, “business/ecommerce” or “business/marketing”. Also, make sure to correctly cite the source for your pictures or citations from other authors, if you want to increase your chances for submission.
Thank you! Your efforts will help Steemit become clearer and stronger.
