They say old dogs can learn new tricks. That must be true since I learned something this week. Something that I've known my whole life but never paid much attention to.
I leaned that letting go of things, whether the thing your letting go of is a person or a thing, it can be a tough thing you're having to do. I am one of those people who don't "just make friends." Nope, I am one of those kinds of people that I get close to those I choose to surround myself with, and I count them as family rather than just a friend. So, letting go of people that come in or out of my life is a tough thing to do.
This week though, I had to realize that the same person I considered someone I'd always keep in my life as if he were a little brother, I had to let go of. He was as a different person as I was. We had both grown older and gone in different ways with our lives. He wasn't the same person I'd met so long ago.
I did what was needed. I said "Deuces," my way of saying good-bye, and turned my back to him, walked away. Leaving our relationship in a less than perfect way, but less messy than it could've gotten.
I'm happy to reflect on who I once knew. The crazy kid who thought he was invincible, and knew his smile could hang the moon, the crazy kid who thought sis could do no wrong and always had my back. I'm happy with knowing that guy, and still hold much love in my heart for him. No matter who he is today, he'll always be my Cane.
At least though, we left things in a place that maybe some day, we can get back to being family but yet if we don't we'll always hold each other in our hearts.
Never take personal relationships for granted. Tell those you love how much they mean to you, but always know that as you both go through life, people do change, and grow apart. Change is good, and when you put away someone whom you've outgrown, you've just made room for someone else to become close to.
Life is about growing. It's a fact that catches up to all of us. It's up to us how we make it through. Being kind to each other is all that really matters, you never know how you'll touch someone's life.
