Why The Political Killings

I remember back in the days when we were still in secondary school, a group of my friends and I visited a friend and he told us there was this interesting film he wanted us to watch. We were so excited and were wondering if it was a Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger or Jean-Claude Van Damme films but we were in for a shocker. The name of the film our friend wanted us to watch was called “The Man Who Saw Tomorrow”. The name kind of catches you as something that would be a science fiction film or about time travel or stuffs like that. But we were shocked to discover it was a documentary film about a man called Nostradamus.

The film was boring to me at first, the sound track they were playing didn’t help matters, I found myself nodding due to the sleep that was about to sweep me away, but something later caught my attention, they started talking about a US president called Abraham Lincoln and how he had tried several times to be president and when he finally became the president of the US he was later assassinated. That pained me a lot, as we went along we came up to the part where they talked about the Kennedy family. John F Kennedy was assassinated and so was his brother Robert Kennedy. I felt all these killings were just a waste of human lives for no good reason. I wondered what would have become of them if they hadn’t been assassinated.

We just conducted the presidential elections in Nigeria last Saturday and the incumbent was announced the winner late Tuesday night. The time leading to the election and during the election saw a lot of political killings, party chieftains from both major parties were killed or should I say assassinated, innocent by standers were killed by stray bullets, political thugs were shot dead while trying to snatch ballot boxes. And at the end of the day, most of these murders go unresolved and the perpetrators go unpunished and live to cause more havoc in the future.

The families of the dead are left to morn their dead, some of them were the bread winners of the family, some are only child, some are graduates that are just servicing their father land as they were used by the electoral body as election staffs to conduct the elections but some power drunk people have cut down the lives of all these people and the pain will ever be in the heart of beloved ones.

In Conclusion

We need to make a change, no toast for power should cause the life of another been taken. It is even worst when we say we are practicing democracy but we don’t want the will of the people to prevail. Eliminating your opponent don’t solve your problem, it has rather created a lot of problems for the people that rely on the person you took away for survival. Our leaders should always tell their followers they don’t support violence or killings all in the name of supporting them. Remember, there is something called karma and it will always catch up with you. Peace.
