Procrastination - what is that all about then.

Procrastination can be such a big thing for so many people. Why is that so? And what can we do about it. How do we become more motivated? What is the answer?

I once heard someone say that they don't bother with procrastination, they don't have time and just put it off until tomorrow. Still brings a smile to my face when I think of it.

I think one of the biggest factors is our thinking. Next time you feel tempted to put something off until later, notice if you have thinking around all of the other things you'll need to do. It's often so easy to think, but once we've mowed the grass there is all of that ironing to do and once that is done, the windows need cleaning and then there is the shopping.

One thing that I find helpful is to prioritise, decide which big thing needs to be done next and focus on that as if it were the only thing in the world.

Another thing that I find of enormous use, is to enjoy what you're doing at that moment in time, even if it's not something you'd ordinarily do for fun. Figure out what it would take to enjoy that task.

Something else that is really useful is to focus on the great feelings that the accomplishment of finishing something brings. Particularly when you see how many other things you've done and on the back of that good feeling, you're in great shape to take the next step.

It is all too easy to stay out of action. Remain on the sidelines and reflect on how unproductive we've been again. It's just thinking

How do you eat an elephant?
One bite at a time!

Another great way to get stuff done is to break a task down into smaller parts. As small as you need them to be in order to take that next step to doing one more thing towards getting something done.

Be careful how much time you give over to a task. Remember Parkinson's Law:

"Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion."

So in other words, within reason, a job or task will grow to fill the time available. Ever have something take all day, when you know in your heart you could have done it in a couple of hours?

So stay in action. Don't wait for inspiration to strike. Get in action, inspiration is much more likely to strike if you're already achieving stuff.

With love and best wishes, Kevin
