Determination is the key driving factor behind success. Without determination, one cannot achieve anything that even resembles success.

"WHERE THE DETERMINATION IS, THE WAY CAN BE FOUND"

Determination in the micro of life might just be to get out of bed or to go to the gym or to write a blog post.

Determination in the macro of life is to have a fire within yourself, a vision of a future that is better than the present. This fire drives you and guides you towards your vision and even upon arrival to that vision, the fire will shift and you will find another vision to move towards. Determination is not just a “feeling”, its a compass, its the means, its the will that is required to succeed at anything in life. Determination is not a trait, it is a requirement.

In the Richest Man in Babylon, we are presented the tale of Dabasir to explain the importance of determination.

Dabasir was trained as a saddle maker by his father in the ancient city of Babylon. He and his wife spent money frivolously and ended up owing a lot of money to a lot of people. Upon realization that he would never be able to pay his debts to his lenders, friends and family, Dabasir left Babylon with nothing while his wife returned to her father.

Dabasir struggled to make money while finding jobs with caravan traders. He eventually fell in with the wrong group of people and ended up robbing other caravan traders, until he was caught by a group of tribesman who then sold him as a slave to a Syrian desert chief.

Dabasir’s owner was about to make him into a Eunuch, when one of the chief’s wives, Sira, spoke up and said:

“Of eunuchs we have plenty, but of camel tenders we have few and they are a worthless lot. Even this day I would visit my mother who is sick with the fever and there is no slave I would trust to lead my camel. Ask this slave if he can lead a camel.”

Dabasir replied, trying to constrain his eagerness:

“I can make them kneel, I can load them, I can lead them on long trips without tiring. If need be, I can repair their trappings.”

The master decided to allow his wife, Sira, to take Dabasir as her camel tender.

While accompanying Sira to her mother, Dabasir explained his life story to her and continued to proclaim that he was not a slave by birth, and was actually a free man. Sira questioned him:

“How can you call yourself a free man when your weakness has brought you to this? If a man has in himself the soul of a slave will he not become one no matter what his birth, even as water seeks its level? If a man has within him the soul of a free man, will he not become respected and honored in his own city in spite of his misfortune?”

“ 'Have you a desire to repay the just debts you owe in Babylon?'

" 'Yes, I have the desire, but I see no way'

" If thou contentedly let the years slip by and make no effort to repay, then thou hast but the contemptible soul of a slave. No man is otherwise who cannot respect himself and no man can respect himself who does not repay honest debts.”

“Does not thy great king fight his enemies in every way he can and with every force he has? Thy debts are thy enemies. They ran thee out of Babylon. You left them alone and they grew too strong for thee.”

Dabasir sat with this conversation for days, replaying it in his head, trying to come up with rebuttals to Sira’s assessments of his “freeness”. On their next trip to Sira’s mother, their arrival took a different direction.

Sira asked Dabasir once again:

“ 'Dabasir, hast thou the soul of a free man or the soul of a slave?'

" 'The soul of a free man,' I insisted.

" 'Now is thy chance to prove it."

Dabasir asked Sira to come with him, but she would not. He thanked her for what she’s done and then left with 2 camels in hopes to find his way back to Babylon. He journeyed for many days and many nights in the desert. One day, he collapsed to the ground from dehydration and hunger.

Upon waking, Dabasir contemplated life, he wondered if this barren desert was his final resting place. Something sparked in his mind and suddenly, he felt as though he could see the world in a new light:

“All the world seemed to be of a different color as though I had been looking at it through a colored stone which had suddenly been removed. At last I saw the true values in life.

"Die in the desert! Not I! With a new vision, I saw the things that I must do. First I would go back to Babylon and face every man to whom I owed an unpaid debt. I should tell them that after years of wandering and misfortune, I had come back to pay my debts as fast as the gods would permit. Next I should make a home for my wife and become a citizen of whom my parents should be proud.

"My debts were my enemies, but the men I owed were my friends for they had trusted me and believed in me.”

“Within me surged the soul of a free man going back to conquer his enemies and reward his friends. I thrilled with the great resolve.”

“We found the trail to Babylon because the soul of a free man looks at life as a series of problems to be solved and solves them, while the soul of a slave whines, What can I do who am but a slave?”

Dabasir ended up back in Babylon and he revisited his old friends and those he owed debts to. He apologized for all he had done and told them that he would do anything in the world to pay them back for their loans and generosity. One of these men, Mathon, the gold lender, was able to get Dabasir a job working with Nebatur, the camel trader:

“With him, my knowledge of camels I put to good use. Gradually I was able to repay every copper and every piece of silver. Then at last I could hold up my head and feel that I was an honorable man among men.”

And so the tale of Dabasir comes to an end:

"He found his own soul when he realized a great truth, a truth that had been known and used by wise men long before his time.

It has led men of all ages out of difficulties and into success and it will continue to do so for those who have the wisdom to understand its magic power. It is for any man to use who reads these lines.

WHERE THE DETERMINATION IS, THE WAY CAN BE FOUND”

Very well written! Keep up the good work. The fire of my determination is ignited by my will to succeed. As Eric Thomas might say, I want success as bad as I want to breathe!

I am driven towards my goals by the strong work ethic my parents raised me with. My children ignite the fire of my determination. I am determined to provide for them and to show them the value of hard, honest work.

I'm driven by the process. I love the work that I do and it's the feeling of doing what I love that drives me to work harder and achieve more!

"Are you a slave or a free man?" This was a question to Dabasir's soul. This was the determination that ignites his fire, the desire to be free in his soul. He was still a slave worker but he began to pay off his debts with hard work. This made him a free man. I'm glad you asked the question, "What ignites the fire of our determination?" Some are driven. This means an outside force is driving us. In the case of "driven" our soul is not free. Some are motivated by intrinsic or extrinsic reward. But, "What ignites the fire of your determination?" is an engaging question. This will take time to think about. We are all determined people for we have challenged to the point of replying to the question. "What ignites us?" is an arrow penetrating the inner man. There I see compassion and love as great powers but there is also great, lust, pride, desires for recognition and acceptance. In one word we are just like Dabasir with a burning desire to be free in our soul. What ignites me in my daily life must be called love. I will stop everything I am doing and put it all on hold for the one I love. I will also challenge what I never imagined myself doing for the sake of love. No other inner desire could ignite such passion and determination.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! Being driven by love and compassion is both honorable and extremely powerful! 🙏🏽

Man, this was an awesome write up, favorite post of the day. There is so much value in that story, and not just in the end line. I think that where are thoughts and beliefs are in regards to ourselves, our inner self, is where we will end in life.

Vision drives me towards my goals. I'm currently trying to discover a place of clarity within myself that I've seen and maintained for short periods of time. My goal is to discover this for myself, find my true nature, and help others who are trying to do the same. I'm determined because I think it could change the world for the better, and improve quality of life and the connection we have with eachother and nature.

Other goals are providing for my family and doing work I'm passionate about, which if I succeed in my main goal will happen on it's own.

Glad I followed you, your posts are great!

Thank you for the kind words and for sharing your thoughts! I agree that in the end, our most valuable possession is our inner self. Money and fancy objects are just fleeting extravagences that can bring us short-term joy - which is not a bad thing, so long as the user understands that these material items and the joy they bring are only temporary.

Our inner self and our loved ones are all we have. Material possessions are just fleeting moments that we get to enjoy, but it's our loved ones and our inner self that are eternal.

Well said!

We all strive daily to accomplish our set of goals while staying focused to the tasks at hand. I’m driven because my goals are Requirements in my life, so there is no alternative but to achieve them. My parents and my two children ignites the fire of my determination.

Just a side note looking for advice. What provider would you recommend for buying some Steem Power delegation? I am going to enhance my ability to give back to the community!

SP delegations are a great way to grow both your account and your community! I use and highly recommend Blocktrades. They're currently not offering SP delegations because they've had such an influx of orders recently. Here's a recent announcement they made about it: https://steemit.com/blocktrades/@blocktrades/new-steem-power-delegations-from-blocktrades-still-on-hold

Great info. Thanks! I will keep an eye out for them to re-enable them. I think Blocktrades are amazing!

I used the Exchange feature in Blockchain.ino to go from Ether to Bitcoin Cash (they use Shapeshift in their integrated exchange). The exchange failed, Shapeshift received my Ether and didn't refund it. It has been over a week and their support still hasn't got back to me.

With Blocktrades, I had a minor concern and they got back to me within 15 minutes!

Expensive lesson learned!

I'm driven by what I believe I am. I am a good person and therefore I'll be good to others. I don't do anything base on feelings although feeling good is great but I'm not reliant on feelings. My drive for life is purely base on choice and I believe that everyone can decide to be a victor in their life and not a victim.

This is what drives me, the hope and possibility of an entire human race thats wholesome and powerful!

"I believe that everyone can decide to be a victor in their life and not a victim."

I really agree with this and believe that there's a huge epidemic of people claiming to be victims and playing the blame game rather than accepting responsibility for their own success. I'm also driven by hope and a vision for a brighter future for the human race! Thanks for sharing!

Yep you're right. It is an epidemic, a psychological sickness. Another huge problem is that a lot of modern cultures don't identify with the victim mentality as a sickness therefore we don't take "medication" for it to get healthy coz we don't even think it's a problem. Hopefully more and more people will realise that this way of thinking cripples a culture and that love actually means taking action towards such mentality.

I believe it's just a matter of time that more and more people will be sick and tired being a powerless version of themselves :)

🙏🏽

It is an epidemic, I 100% agree!

What drives you toward your goals?
Executing a well laid out plan drives me towards my goal.

What ignites the fire of your determination?
The dream to be success and working with a highly motivated team.

What drives me toward my goals are: love, determination and the reward.

What ignites the fire of my determination is the motivation of seing that people are happy and the goals are achived. If I feel motivated, I am determined to do whatever I have to do or whatever I planned to do.

By the way, that is a great story. It's so true that if your soul is free, you are free indeed; if your soul is a slave, than you are a slave even if you think that you are free.
Thank you for shareing.

Love, determination and an appreciation for the game always kick me into action!

Determination is a strong personal force! I think it allows those to succeed with less resources within themselves and in the physical world in spite of great obstacles. I have know brilliant people who complain about lack of success, but lack determination. I have know people who were quite average in every way who have had great success and happiness due to their drive. Having the determination to just show up is enough to set the stage for great things!

Wonderful lesson.

Showing up is the first step! Thanks for sharing your experiences!

Yes! SHOW UP! So many people are just talking the talk and never actually do anything... GET TO WORK and you will succeed!

"QOTD: What drives you toward your goals? What ignites the fire of your determination?"

Good question for New Year. I can't get myself to do much until my mom put a chart to keep track. If I finish my homework for 30 days I can buy something I want for thirty dollars. So half money motivates me and half mom. I really got to think about my goals. Thanks.

That's a great job on your mom's part! Motivation can be both external and internal. Motivation is typically external while we are young and as we get older, and if we are raised right, our motivations develop as internal desires to achieve for ourselves and for others!

"Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough"

Determination is key!

What an outstanding post! Determination! One can never give up! Very inspiring post! I enjoyed it immensely! Thank you very much for sharing! Blessed 2018 my Friends! :)

Thank you for your kind words and support! 2018 will be a great year! 🙏🏽

one of the determination quotes that i love from Vince Lombardi Jr. is “The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack in will ”

I love that quote! Many people spend all day reading and learning, which is great, but then when it comes time to go out into the world and act on the knowledge, they fail to gather the will.. Thanks for sharing!

Agreed! It all comes down to actually doing things rather than just pondering your next move all day.

Exactly !! all it takes is the will and strength .. Glad u liked it ^

determination is the great key to everything in life

I give up many times but then I challenge to get back up again for two reasons> First, I need to survive. Second, there is a reward that comes when the goal is accomplished.

Very nice bro good post

I want to enjoy being rich.

Without the drive and determination to suceed there is no will for it, therefore you cannot succeed.
