Hi there fellow Steemians!
This was our second full day in Hanoi and it’s crazy how much energy you have when you’re travelling. In this one day we did a self-guided walking tour around the Old Quarter that took us almost the entire day and then saw a spectacular performance at Hanoi’s Opera House.
We found the walking tour in the most recent edition of the Lonely Planet’s Vietnam book and according to the book, it should only take us around 2 hours to complete it, but it ended up taking us a little longer…about 3 hours longer! The Old Quarter was so intricately beautiful; we just wanted to go down every windy street and narrow alleyway that we walked passed, fearing that if we didn’t, we might never be able to find it again. Unlike some of the other cities we’ve been to, Hanoi was absolutely brimming with local life, from the loud and bustling fresh food markets down Dong Xuan and Hang Chieu Street to the large gatherings of men all casually squatting in the streets, taking a deep drag from their cigarettes with each small sip of their ca phe sua da (Vietnamese iced coffee).
We later walked by Café Hương Mai and had our first taste of weasel coffee! I’m not a huge coffee drinker to begin with, but it was a unique experience nonetheless. Then, we walked to Hanoi’s Opera House to check if there was anything interesting on and to our luck and surprise, there was! Lang Toi (My Village) by Lune Production was performing that night and though we hadn’t really heard of them before, we decided to take a gamble and get tickets anyway because it would just be cool to see the inside of the opera house. The tickets weren’t cheap, but now, after seeing the performance, I would happily pay double the price to see it again. The story was captivating, the set was beautifully authentic and the performers were absolutely breathtaking. The extreme acrobatic stunts using only long bamboo sticks kept me on the edge of my seat the entire show! They show tours internationally as well, so if you ever get a chance to see them, please, please do, because I guarantee it will be worth it!
So, that was the perfect end, to a perfect day! Thank you for taking the time to watch and read my travel vlog/blog. Thank you for all the support guys!
