Abandoned Baby Chick

in life •  7 years ago

This little guy has been abandoned by his mother. We weren't sure what to do with him, as we have a new dog in the house that is quite the hunter, and it would be difficult to keep the two apart in our communal living space.

We gave it a day, and to our surprise, this little guy has been adopted by our most recent batch of chicks! They kept him warm during the cool night last night, huddling so tightly around him that he was completely buried in a mess of feathers and fluff.

They let him follow them around while they forage, inadvertently showing and teaching him how to fend for himself.
We will keep a close eye on this little one, as he is still quite vulnerable. But for now, I am so proud of our chicks for accepting him into their circle. Time will tell if they have what it takes: babies raising a baby.

Animals take care of each other for the most part if they can.

I have seen both ends of the spectrum with this group, which is what makes it so fascinating to me. Some hens with no interest in raising their offspring, abandoning them, some hens pecking at orphans, some roosters bullying and fighting all the time, and then some roosters an hens forming little groups and families and taking care of each other!

That's crazy that they attack the little ones. I have a dog who raised some kittens that were abandoned. She began lactating when we introduced them to her. She is a good mommy.

Waoo thats a great work done by you 😊

Thank you! But All the credit goes to the poultry! :)

That baby chick so cute🙂
What a cruel mother to abandon such a cute chick🤔 you are loyal and kind to animal mam🙂

lol Leoumesh! I do not think we can place human emotion onto animals in this way!

But why mam 🤔
They also have feeling like ours, no?😥

Probably not. A lion hunting a gazelle is not cruel and evil for killing, is it? There is no morality to it.

Yup mam🙂. I got it. Its their nature to kill and survive. Its how our ecosystem gets balanced
