If you are married, do you remember dating?
If you are single, have you tried online dating? Well, job hunting is similar because it is a numbers game. Like love, like work, it can feel like it comes down to luck.
Some have said, "Luck is when preparation meets opportunity."
There is the preparing portion. You go to school, join clubs, all in hopes of filling out that perfect resume. You format, have your bestest proofread, and finally take a deep breath as you attend your first of many career fairs.
In college the career fair was held at the local state college. Doritos would have a booth and half the fun was making rounds to see how many bags of chips and jars of dip you could grab before the event ended.
I went to business school
In a nutshell, elevator pitching, firm handshakes, and faking it until you made it was the name of the game. The amount of hours preparing for these events was the direct result of how many calls you received after the career fair.
If you are anything like me, you probably struggled in this business-dating world.
Either, your resume was fine which earned you an interview, but the job paid to low. On the other hand, you may find the pay to be good, but amount of experienced required is unrealistic. Worst case scenario, the pay is good, the qualifications are reasonable, but you don’t make it past the first round. Until one day, it happens, you’re hired!
The first few days are the best. Learning is overwhelming, you arrive early and leave late, you study all night and put in everything you have. Your first promotion is a party, your second and third within two years are honorable mentions. Your family is proud, your school debt is paid, and before you know it you are changing careers to achieve work-life balance. Since you’re dating your job full-time, real-life relationships take a back seat.
Don't miss a loved one’s wedding because of work, don't miss out on birthday parties, don't miss out on taking a trip because after time passes those memories are the only ones that made working that job worth it.
You’re on to your second career. The benefits are amazing because paying that health insurance is no joke. The pay and hours are a dream-come-true and you now have this surplus you refer to as your saving/investing/do whatever I want money to brag about. After the honeymoon phase of dating ends, the struggle begins, and getting bought out becomes a new reality for you. This new normal goes on for a while. Let’s fast forward to almost four years. The sudden realization that so much time has passed without a break and suddenly you find yourself unemployed.
Back to the drawing board.
Revise your resume and cover letter. Apply, follow up, repeat day after day after day.
Did I mention after one too many days?!
The anxiety is building with each passing day. Upload your resume on every job search site, call/email all your recruiting friends, and even get your gym buddies to ask around for you. Job hunting is the WORST! You become so hopeful with each phone interview, with each interview, and that heartbreaking moment when they email you back and start it with unfortunately....
The search continues and the cycle does not end with each rejection, but begins with each hopeful phone call. I am going to find an amazing job. Until then, tell me about your career. How did you find it—or did it find you?!
You'll get something. It's a numbers game. Gotta just keep on applying, even though it's shit at the time.

It is a tough thing to do, I hear ya! But again you can opt for a very different lifestyle, that of a freelancer, or of an entrepreneur, which is my life choice after 14 years of being employed.
Each approach has its pros and cons, yet the freedom this one gives is quite rewarding (*Yea there is always anxiety and stress even here..will I succeed? how much will I make this month? will i survive? compared to all the stress in being employed...dealing with obnoxious managers, colleagues, stressful deadlines and low pay)
Good luck either way Kubbyyyyy :D

It was the perfect timing for me to read this, Kubby! Thank you so much for putting it in writing, it was a genuine and authentic narrative that I'm sure will recognise from their own life experiences. Yesterday I was browsing through lists of jobs I'd really love to do and realising more and more that I would first need to complete an MB A in Finance and learn the intricacies of investment, financial management, risk assessment, portfolio balancing and a hundred other things, before I can realistically apply for any of those dream jobs of mine.
So now the choice is clear: either to head back to university in the fall (if my application makes the cut) or to move to Portugal and chill. Either way, the job hunt is over for me for now! :D
Good luck with yours! ;)

Keep us updated oleg! :) always great to hear from you.

Job hunting, switching careers and dating they all can suck. I know I'm on my 5th career now (film editor, photographer, finance, retail and now social marketer.) Divorced twice. But hey life is a constant adventure! I'm new to Steemit and still trying to figure this all out. I wish I could come to the meetup, maybe next one. Or if you know of one closer to home(NC of VA) let me know. Thanks and have a great day!

I really enjoyed the creativity of being a film editor and the company and people I worked with were great and supportive. I am enjoying the freedom of being a social marketer now. Although it takes a lot of discipline. How about you? What's your dream job?

You have absolutely got this!
All of my best opportunities came from getting involved with volunteering or community groups. I've definitely met my best contacts that way.
Best of luck to you sunshine!

Well describe!!! As a freelancer, getting new contact, opening new doors is part of deal. It has it's up and down... I can't see myself working for 10 for the same companie unless special circonstances are under the hood. Never tought to compare dating to job searching, maybe with this approach I will have more success with love 😂

When I was still looking for a job from 8-5 I was lucky. I almost always got a job on the first interview. I really did not experience many rejections. I did not go study after high school, I just wanted to get married, but I receive training by the employers I was working for. I was doing bookkeeping most of my life. But 5 years ago, after working for over 30 years for bosses, I asked the Lord to please help me as I don't want to work for a boss anymore. I don't know how is affairs in the state, but for me working a day job was like paid slavery. They own your life. You only have so many days vacation a year. Most of the times you must plead to get a day off. If you get sick and take sick leave, it is frowned upon. So yes and after praying I started to rent out one holiday home and then the next one. The news spread and I got other homes to let out by word of mouth. I am also letting out a few permanent homes that gives me a small basic income. I don't have a lot of money but I am free! Nobody owns me any more, my life and my time is my own. I work when I want to and I enjoy life when I want to.
My son and his partner get jobs and then all of a sudden the employer cannot afford to pay them anymore. The one contractor owes my son R12000 in salaries that was not paid and just now after working for 3 months almost night and day for very low pay, the employer again said they cannot afford to pay him anymore. Still waiting for last months salary. So we decided to also start a business for him, selling computers. He got me the new PC R2500 cheaper than the biggest company around here, so we think he can make a life out it.
There is 16.17 million people unemployed in South Africa. We have an unemployment rate of 26.7 percent and whites are paying for apartheid. The government and big companies are forced to employ first black people, then brown people, then woman and lastly white men. So lots of people lost their jobs in the last 20 years since the end of apartheid.
So at least there still is opportunities in the USA, you did get a lot of interviews, so it means that there still is jobs available, your qualifications is good, and you have a great personality. You are learning new social skills and how to become an expert at interviews. So hang in there, dear friend, your dream job may be just around the corner! Thinking of you and keeping you in my prayers. Much love xxx

Wow, thank you so much hope! It is interesting to hear everyone's journey with work and careers. God really guided you and prepared you for the lifestyle you live now. You can also help so many people now. That unemployment rate is wild. I cannot even imagine working then having an employer tell me they cannot afford to pay me. :( Ill be praying for your family and I know you are praying for mine. Thank you for always encouraging me. I am excited for you to get your computer and get all set up. i am here to help whenever you need it!
