High Intensity Interval Training
Is it possible to accomplish and still get full workout benefits?
Free time is getting more and more limited with our modern social environment, yet it is still vital to exercise each day. There are also those that never really get going as it is a commitment... but what if you could gain great health benefits in only a few minutes of time?
Luckily there are a few simple ways to achieve an increase in fitness without such a time and travel commitment (to the Gym and back). Here are some ways to increase your fitness, without taking a long jog or committing to a workout program:
Select some muscle constriction and relaxing "exercises" or actions (you can choose or below look at the film to get an idea) and change them every other day to not allow the body to get too used to them. You will want to tighten the muscles and relax the muscles fully to gain their full range... the relaxing part being just as important as the constriction. As a Martial Artists I choose Kata, like Sanchin, alternating from slow and hard, to fast, repeating it 3 or 4 days in a session:
Next after the short set, repeat them... but this time with speed. Science has found that short bursts of all out effort followed by short periods of complete rest will increase your health potentials exponentially.
Another example would be to do a 30 second sprint followed by 30 second rest... this is called the "Tabata" method. It is simple repeated for 4 or 5 minutes switching from action to rest states. This can be done with virtually all exercises, like jumping jacks, squats, jogging in place, etc., so you do not need to be a coach, just think back to your school days and your (Physical Education) PE classes.
Advantages over Cardio
- Time saving at the gym
- No equipment needed
- Cut the boredom
- Easier to maintantheprogram
- Improved VO2 Max (amount of oxygen your body can use during exertion)
- Same Fat Burn as longer Cardio sessions
No Magic Here
This is not a magic weight loss program, you still need to eat better for weight loss or maximized health, but at least your exercise time does not cut into your busy schedule as much.
And you do not need to stop your other workouts, jogs or exercise programs, this is just a great addition or alternate way to gain better health and longevity.
You do not need to add this before or after your regular workouts (if you have one), it is as a supplement. HITT Workouts are extremely fatiguing and taxing on the body... so adding them to another workout program may do more harm than good. HIIT is a great alternative... especially if time is of the essence for you and especially for travelers as they can be done in the privacy of your own room.
Just, H.I.I.T. it....

@kyusho do you believe that only diet and incidental exercise are sufficient to maintain healthy weight or exercise is essential to maintain a healthy body?
I find there are a lot of controversial information - for example in France, a lot of people are quite skinny but exercising and going to the gym isn't really something that is necessarily part of every day life routines of French people. So I'm wondering if diet is the only real key and simply walking to work, shops etc. is sufficient?
Just a question (we do feel better after exercising though) more specifically around weight.

I Travel to France once or twice a year to instruct Martial Arts, so my view may be slanted. The key is activity, unless you are trying to accomplish more than just health. Fitness to me is different than health, health is making sure all is flowing and operational, while Fitness is building more strength, endurance, etc. While there I also see many people do more in everything like walking, biking, outdoor activity etc., but for me there are two sides of this equation.
