“I’m a dancer”

in life •  7 years ago

10 years ago when someone would ask me to describe myself, this is what I would say. I’d reply with an upbeat, concise “I’m a dancer,” and leave it at that. The response varied, but usually would fall into one of two categories. 1) aww, that’s cute or 2) what KIND of dancer. The latter was usually hinting at me working in some sort of nightlife industry which I would quickly add, “like ballet, jazz, that sort of stuff.” The former response would suggest that this was a phase. Like I was pursuing some sort of hobby to see where it took me. Either way, dance was my identifier. It wasn’t just what I did, but how I defined myself.

Fast forward a decade and my description is so much more. I’m still a dancer, but it is no longer the only thing in my life and for that I’m so grateful. Don’t get me wrong, dance is a HUGE part of my life. It has shaped me in so many ways I couldn’t even begin to describe. But when asked my profession now I proudly respond with “Dance Instructor” and follow up with a blurb about my family’s dance studio.

I feel that some people don’t take my career choice seriously. (I think sometimes I don’t take my career choice seriously.) But every once in awhile something happens where I realize the magnitude of what I get to do everyday. I shape young minds, I foster creativity, I introduce structure and discipline, I encourage progress and celebrate milestones. I get to wiggle and laugh and play. I get to do what I love and share it with others. 10 years ago “I’m a dancer” didn’t mean all this to me. I’m so grateful it does now.
