To all this is a short story about good people, read on!
Wanted to share this story that happened to my wife over the past few days. The tile of the post "Attention", which is meant not only to grab yours but also remind you of the attention economy. The attention economy is a major part of today's society where advertisers are competing to get our attention, time and eye balls. The champs of grabbing our attention are all the content sharing platform who give us a free product only to collect and resell our data. That is in contrast to SteemIt which without advertisers in the traditional sense, help content creators and users get some direct value for their "attention". So before I start with the story, thank you SteemIt.
Back to the story. My wife works in an office building in Los Angeles. She has a nice office job working for a real estate company. Together with the rest of her office, they decided to give a small bonus to one of the parking attendants and facility guy. They knew he got a small bonus from his employer and wanted to match it. The amount was relatively small, $100 as i understand it. They wanted to give this guy in particular a little something because they knew his family was away and he was the only one working to send them money; despite this less than ideal situation, he is always happy, smiles all the time and always willing to help.
Yesterday was the day. My wife gathered everyone to go see him and give him his gift. She gave him the envelope and said a few words of appreciation. Before she could even finish, he started crying. She told me that, she started crying as well for a few second. When she told me the story I right away asked, "he cried for $100?" Well "no" she said, he had not opened the envelope at that time. I realized it had nothing to do with the money. It had everything to do with the fact that a group of people, whom he sees & helps everyday, went out of their way to pay attention to HIM - telling him that they appreciated his work.
The value of attention is hard to quantify in dollar terms, BC, steem or SBD, but it's worth remembering that it goes a long way. Let's all keep in mind the immense value of attention, whether it is to make a friendlier world (give your time to a good cause), or be monetized (make a donation if you can).
