In the grounds of a ruined medieval castle half a dozen old men gather on a carefully tended and lovingly flattened area of grass. They gently roll wooden spheres up and down the sward, with the occasional call of "another yard" or "just too short" and every now and then some admiring applause.

They wear white polo shirts not tucked into their slacks and flat shoes to protect the grass. Those with a full head of hair left leave off the sunhats but most of them have patches that need protection. They don't seem to have work to go to. They've done their work for this lifetime and now it's all play, even if their knees give them a bit of trouble now and then.

The sky has a few small clouds blown by a light breeze to remind us that we're in England, not anywhere more tropical.

There's tea in flasks and probably a bit of cake. At 6pm they have free coaching for anyone who wants to brush their game up. And then it's home in time for Eastenders.
