Are We Hiding Our True Self Behind A Mask?

Hey Everyone!

We all have heard many a times that “love yourself” or “I love myself” sort of things. Right? But, take a pause, and think again, do we actually love ourselves? If yes, then why are we all hiding our flaws and scars?

Why do we all need those filters and editing to be done before we upload or post our pictures in social media? Aren’t we cheating on and doubting ourself? Why do we want others’ approval and acceptance for “Our Life”?

I remember a line, I read on social media a few days back, “The most important relationship in your life is with yourself”. This simple line, has a great and deep meaning which explains it all. You first need to accept and love yourself because “You” are everything in your life.

And if you understand and love yourself, then only you can love and understand other people and maintain a healthy relationship. Right? As they say, “Love yourself first and then you can love others”.

Aren’t We All Wearing A Mask

From the heading of this section you might think “only two faced people wear a mask”. But, aren’t we all wearing a mask, to hide our wrinkles, scars, pores and skin tone? The mask of photoshop, editing, lights and filters.

I know we all do it, even I have done many a times. But, I really never thought of it, why we actually do this. If we accept and love ourselves the way we are, we won’t do it. In fact, we would even love those scars and wrinkles because these are natural things.

Everyone talks about that natural beauty and simplicity, but even then we hide it behind the filters and so much of make up. Just for the sake of others’ approval and acceptance or attention? If not, then why are we all doing it?

In my opinion, we need to accept ourselves, the way we are and let people love us for that. That way, they will love us for who we are rather than for our looks. And that’s really good because looks will fade away, but even then our loved ones will love us.

Self Realization

Today, actually I saw a video by Priyanka Chopra, an Indian actress, which made me realize that somewhere we are doubting and hating ourselves for the way we are. So, we hide ourselves behind those filters.

We need to realize and accept ourselves, because it’s okay if the society or other people don’t like you or accept you, but it’s not okay to not accept yourself. Because your relationship and your life is first with “you” then with other things, people and relations.

So, just fall in love with yourself, with those flaws and scars. This life is really beautiful even with those scars. Always remember that, “Every rose has its thorn”. So, just love yourself and live a carefree life :)

Without a doubt

I thought so.

Thank you for the article! When reading about masks or public image we make, I often refresh this paragraph of Slavoj Zizek. Who talks about the face as the true mask, and how I interpret it everything we put on top of it is carefully chosen and thus more revealing than the face. I think you are right that everything constructs some kind of public image. The question is if that is hiding or just revealing more?

Paraphrasing Zizek:
What you construct as a mask as the real person behind the mask, you construct in order to blur and make tolerable to yourself the things you do in public role. It is not that when you take off this mask (Instagram filter etc.) that you can truly see from the face that the person for instance is a horrible person. The face is the ultimate mask, which we can see as a fellowman with whom we can identify and empathize. What you see when a person constructs a mask in front of their face is the person stare at you directly, that is why it is so uncomfortable.

“There are various ways of seeing this. I am sure even psychologists and philosophers will have different takes on the subject matter. What you say makes sense too. The mask can sometimes be revealing of what’s underneath, and sometimes it can’t be. What I meant to say was that we generally try to hide our true self behind a mask because we are afraid of the flaws and the imperfections.”

This is a great piece. I totally relate to this piece. I had a very bad set of teeth which made it hard for me to smile or laugh because of fear of being mocked. I was humiliated alot of times because of this. It made me inferior. It made me want to try suiside. I actually hated it when people talked about my bad set of teeth. I was given many names in high school like " teeth doctor", "teeth prophet", "mr teeth" "uncle teeth", "African Map teeth". I lost my boldness and confindence and because I couldn't face it again, I had to see a dentist. Now the teeth is ok. And I now fit in well. Now I am masked. I have seen a lot of people succeeding in life because of their scars. People loving them for being bold to carry the scars around. Sometimes I regret wearing this mask but what to do? Its a lesson I have learnt. Thanks again for this

Hey! I know being humiliated and bullied makes one feel really inferior and depressed. But, we should be strong enough and just ignore those kind of people, their comments and behavior represents themselves not others. And always remember this, “If they don’t know you personally, don’t take it personal”.

And yeah, you are not wearing a mask, so no need to feel bad about it. Because taking care of personal health and wearing a mask of beauty using those artificial things are two different sort of things. As, They say bad set of teeth can create problems in future, so you just cared for your health.

So, don’t feel inferior. Life is really beautiful, just enjoy every moment and all phases of life :))

Awwwwn thank you so much for this. Its relieving

Got a Doubt ... Why is it limited to Faces ?
Our Bodies are being masked with many different things from head to toe ...

Yeah, but generally faces are being masked.
