Hey people .... here's a painting of a gauntlet, practicing armor shading, check out the step by step process below.
I start with the darkest areas or contours to establish the base and then just fill in the shading. This way it's easier to quickly get the proportions and basic shading in. Painting is more about abstracting what you see and I found this to be the best method for me to see shapes and forms and indicate them easily.
Tried painting in color this time, unlike my previous posts ... lines and values. The process with color is pretty much the same as for the value paintings, except there's also hue and saturation to worry about on top of value(brightness). I look for the darker silhouettes of color and indicate those first ... but try to group areas where I can, in order to avoid unnecessary detailing in the beginning. So if there are colors that kinda merge into one, I'll just approximate a general color for that particular area.
This is somewhat of a detailed piece and it's also a close-up, which makes it a more complex painting from a rendering perspective. There's a lot more blending and light color shifts which need to be taken of. Fixing all that requires a bit more accuracy and patience to get the thing to look right.
Suggestions for my future posts are very welcome ... and thank you for your votes and resteems guys :)
The final result is quite realistic with the reflections, I like it!
If you're painting, have you tried Verve Painter as the painting software? (If I remember correctly, its developer Taron is one of the devs for Zbrush.) It's free and has fully controllable fluid and drying and canvas simulation for the paint. This gives enormous color abstraction. And that with very little work. The only minus right now is that it's a beta and has limited undos for high resolution.

The light reflection in the gauntlet and the color choices to make it realistic is just amazing. How long does it take you to do a piece like this?
