The MaMa of the Red Dao Hill Tribe in Sapa, Vietnam

in life •  7 years ago

This is MaMa of the Red Dao hill tribe. Her tribe is known for their expertise in herbal medicine, specifically known for their medicine baths. MaMa reminded me of my grandmother, which led to me wanting to photograph her. She was old, withered, and with her severe hunch only came up to my bellybutton. She spoke no English; could only point to herself and say 'MaMa. Me.' She followed it with 'Dao' and pointed to her red head wrap.

Some people, including myself, give Sa Pa a lot of shit for being inauthentic; it's tribespeople abrasive and brash with their assertive approaches to salesmanship. We bitch that we've spent a lot of money to be in Sa Pa and want to be left alone to admire it in peace, without being asked 500 times to buy a scarf and a necklace.

I get it. I don't like it. But do you really think they do? Do you think this woman, who's been here to see it all, likes watching her village go from a place of bona fide tradition to a tourist trap? Do you think she likes that Westerners invite themselves to walk all over their backyards, posing on their properties with selfie sticks? That tour companies say that the proceeds go towards bettering their living situations when clearly that isn't the case? Or when tourists take photographs of them without asking permission, like they are animals at the zoo?

These people are people.

We, as visitors, need to respect them.

Yes, their tactics are invasive. But we're invasive for being there in the first place, and MaMa nor anyone else had a say in that.

Beautiful picture very detailed one!

All cultures different from ours make us curious, we want to know more about them, take pictures of their life forms. However, I share that all of them must be done with respect, always giving them to understand that they cause us admiration for their way of being or living.

you right

You are right, of course. The tourist invasion is a two-edged sword.

You are most right.... everyone deserve at least little or more respect which should be given to them..

Hola @martinphoto

I was in Sa Pa 8 years ago and I remember that it was all about money. While walking down a muddy path, a couple of friends and I spotted a small group of kids sitting on a stone wall. As soon a we tried taking a picture of them, we heard them sreaming "one picture one dollard" over and over again. It pretty much sums up our experience in Sa Pa. I also remember the village being littered with candy wraps, I hope this has changed.

Thank you so much for this post !!!
I had a beautiful time in Sapa, staying at Mama Tee's beautiful family house for 4 days. These people are incredible, they work in the house, around the house, in the fields, creating all kind of beautiful jewelry and bags among other, trekking with tourists ... from dawn to dusk, they never stop and still have the force to smile without any complain. Also a lot of them are able to speak English, better than some "educated" (I hate that term) people that i know, learnt from all the tourists they have met around. That is very impressive.
I had an unforgettable and beautiful time in Sapa. I have been hosted like a family member and the place is just beautiful.
Traveling to Sapa from Hanoï is actually cheap but I guess it depends on the way each person likes to travel. I Loved my time there, was sad to leave actually but as you can see, happy to buy all their beautiful creations along the way, they are great, easy to carry and cheap souvenirs for family !

Sorry for the long post ( i had to stop myself lol ) but it is something that I see ("selfish"stick use and human zoo...) so often when I am traveling and always makes me sick. It needs to be said ! So thank you again for your post!!

It is funny how we don't mind to watch and be surrounded by adds everywhere trying to get us to buy stuff that we don't need but we do mind about people trying to sell their art to tourists who come to enjoy their villages... Weird world.

Have a great day you all !

Peace, Love , Respect and Unity :)
