Toddlers are accidents waiting to happen. My husband and I got our first big scare as parents on Friday night. I have a saying "Nothing good ever happens after 10 PM on a Friday." For around six months, something bad always happens on a Friday and usually its around 10 PM.
We usually spend Fridays visiting my mom and brothers. Typically, around 10 PM everyone is tired and grumpy which leads to clashes and fussing between family members. This particular Friday my husband dropped me off then ditched me to go watch a football game. He didn't pick me up until around 11. Thankfully, the night ended well and we headed home with me thinking Friday had gone well.
We got home and Little Rabbit wanted to play and didn't want to go to bed even though her little toddler body was so tired! I'd pull her in bed but she'd fight and get off the bed and go play. Around 11:30 she finally seemed to give in and her eyes closed. My husband got up and decided to go to the kitchen to make a sandwich. I was laying down with my eyes closed when I felt the bed move and saw Little Rabbit get off the bed and head to the kitchen after daddy.
Not long after I heard my husband yelling, panicked saying I needed to come because the baby cut herself. I ran to the kitchen and there was blood everywhere. Little Rabbit was crying and blood was gushing out of her finger. She somehow got in a cabinet and grabbed a cheese grater and cut herself.
It was bleeding heavily and I couldn't clear the blood to see the cut. Of course in an emergency, everything goes wrong. We couldn't find paper towels, band-aids, or wash clothes. I grabbed a shirt and kept pressure on her finger. It wouldn't stop bleeding so I told my husband we needed to head to the emergency room.
I held Little Rabbit in my lap, fearful I wouldn't be able to keep pressure on her finger if we put her in a car seat. By the time we got 10 minutes to the hospital, she had stopped bleeding. She stopped crying during the ride, fascinated by getting to ride in my lap for the first time. We decided since we have health insurance we should get the finger checked out because it looked like the tip of her finger was missing.
They put her hospital bracelet on me because she's so little.
The emergency room trip took around and hour and a half. Little Rabbit cried a lot having strangers mess with her hurt finger. She was so tired to begin with. Once they got it clean we saw her fingernail was halfway cut off and that's the reason it bled so badly. They cut off the bits of nail hanging loose and bandaged up her finger so that she couldn't pull it off. They gave her a dose of Advil to help her sleep good and prescribed her some antibiotics. Her doctor said finger wounds can get infected and the antibiotics would keep her safe.
I learned that night by husband is useless when it comes to blood. He's a big, tough man but I learned he almost faints at the sight of blood. At the hospital he kept having to sit down because the blood made him dizzy. At one point he had to lay down in the emergency room bed to recover because the sight of blood made him so woozy! Of course I will forever tease him for this!
My Poor Little Baby
We got home and I had to mop the kitchen floor to clean up the blood drops all over. Little rabbit bled all over my arms and clothes as I held her so I did laundry and took a bath. It was after 2 AM when I finally went to bed.
I think Little Rabbit would have been fine if we would have stayed home. It was a lot of blood to come out of a little one and we freaked out. We took the bandage off after 24 hours and her finger looked fine. The wound was really tiny! It's crazy that little cut spewed so much blood.
Better safe than sorry though. I'm glad it was just a tiny cut. She only lost the top half of her fingernail so it'll grow back and the tip of her finger is still attached. I'm very proud of Little Rabbit for being good about the bandage on her finger. She didn't pick at it or try to pull it off at all. All day she was normal as if nothing had happened. Toddlers are resilient little things.
Gosh I am glad she is ok, but I laughed when you said your husband is useless, because that is exactly how I am. If a child at school is bleeding I have no issues, and I can help, but boy let one of my own children bleed or even myself, then I freak out like a crazy maniac. I immediately phone my mother to come and help. I would have been a very bad nurse.

It's so funny because he's a big man. He's 6 ft tall and just a big guy. He was just laying in that hospital bed like he was the patient all faintish at the sight of her bleeding and I'm covered in our daughters blood and fine. It was sweet though because he couldn't handle seeing his daughter in pain and bleeding. He was so sweet to her the next day and cuddled and kept closer watch than normal on her. He's a good dad even if he can't handle open wounds.

Glad she's ok! I guess that's a hard lesson, but will probably stick. Emergency room visits are never fun! How does the nail look? That will probably be sore until it grows back fully. Ouch :-(
I hate the ER. I turned 34 in the ER with a broken collar bone.

When you think you've baby proofed they find something new. I'm glad if we had to go to the ER it was for a small thing instead of her being really sick or something. I almost died as a baby from a fever and was in the ICU. The funny thing is after 24 hours we took the bandage off and it was LITTLE wound. It's crazy how much blood came from such a tiny cut. She was fine after 24 hours. Ouch! Broken collar bone. My cousin flipped an ATV once and broke his collar bone. Took a long time to heal.

That must have been a pretty nasty fever, to be put in the ICU.
Because of the way my bone broke, I had to have two surgeries. One to repair it and one to remove the hardware. They left two screws in, with some lame excuse about not wanting to cause additional tissue damage. I think they just wanted my camera strap to be uncomfortable to teach me a lesson.

Awwww! Poor baby! Poor Mommy!
Yes, daddy's can be pretty useless at times! Glad to hear that all went well and it is amazing that your little doll baby didn't fuss with the bandage.
Feel better everyone!

She's a good girl. I'm glad the bandage didn't bother her much. I was afraid she's rip it off first thing in the morning but she did great and left it alone.

This is why I'm nervous to have my own children. At least the accident happened at home and good parenting was in full action. I'm glad she is OK.

Dang! Glad it was a little cut. But man I would have ran to the ER if there was that much blood too.
Glad she is doing alright now

Glad everything ended up well and the little one is just fine! I'm sure that is so scary as a parent. They are ridiculously resilient, aren't they? When I was in my early 20's and had just moved into an apartment by myself for the first time I sliced my finger cooking. I called my mom in tears and she almost drove out the 30 minutes to come see if I was ok. Luckily it wasn't too bad either, but they do bleed like the dickens to where it is hard to tell just how bad it really is at first!

Seeing all that blood is really scary! I know how your hubby feels because when it is the blood of someone close to you, it can really have an effect! Glad she is ok!

I am so glad she is okay. That first trip to the emergency is always a harrowing experience. It is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to our children. Skin wounds always pour out so much blood. It is a scary situation.

Hard to believe 2 years have passed now. We had the exact same thing happen earlier this year with our toddler.
