These two Caribbean Islands are considered to be the oldest developed territory. When Christopher Columbus arrived here in 1493, he met people who called themselves "Caribbean". The pioneer gave the name of one of the Islands in honor of St. Christopher. Truth over time, thanks to the British, appeared more a brief name — Saint Kitts. So, the island has got a unique nickname.
The names of the first colonies known to locals as Citizens and Nevisians. The capital, Basseterre, is located in St. Kitts. The British settled on the Islands in 1623 and the French settled in 1672. And since then, the Anglo-French confrontation began, which lasted almost 100 years!
The decisive victory in the battle of Brimstone was won by the British in 1782. Thanks to this event, they held control of the territory until 1983. The main industry of St. Kitts and Nevis-tourism, sugar and salt production, processing of cotton. The locals fish, grow rice, sugar cane, Yam and vegetables. Both Islands are of volcanic origin.
All year round, the temperature is almost constant with minimal fluctuations — 27-28 degrees Celsius. The climate is humid and very comfortable. All beaches on both Islands are sandy.
Since 1970, tourism has increasingly displaced sugar production, which was previously considered the main economic source of income. After decades of unprofitable production, the government decided to close the factory after the harvest in 2005.
In order to compensate for the loss of jobs, the government launched a programme to develop agriculture and began to stimulate, among other sectors of the economy — export-oriented production and offshore banking.
