The potential for chaos overshadows the Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh that continues to accept the influx of Rohingya Muslims from Rakhine State, Myanmar. Nearly 400,000 Rohingya refugees are currently at a 20-kilometer-long location between Shah Pori Dwip and Cox's Bazar, the villages used as refugee camps, including the Kutupalong refugee camp.
The number of Rohingya refugees continues to rise and is expected to reach 1 million by the end of 2017. In the current situation, Bangladesh is struggling to cope with the large number of refugees.
In the village town centers, chaos ensued as new refugees came in and rushed to buy plastic sheets and bamboo sticks for their tents. The line is constantly full of movements of people coming in and out of the area.
The Bangladesh government has set aside 1,500 hectares of land as a home for Rohingyas, but there is doubt whether the land is enough. The only road to the refugee villages was a small road. Conditions that complicate the arrival of humanitarian relief trucks.
Whenever the truck pulls up on the side of the road, a crowd of people swarms to ask for the goods. So far, there has been no sign of international assistance in these emergency camps. According to a number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), humanitarian aid takes time to arrive at the camps.
Protect the Temple
Meanwhile, Bangladesh authorities on Friday mobilized hundreds of police to protect Buddhist temples in an area where some 400,000 Rohingya Muslims live in refugee camps. The move comes as fears of attacks on religious minorities are in retaliation from the Rohingya refugee situation in Myanmar.
Thousands of supporters from Islamist militants staged a protest in the border town of Cox's Bazar after Friday prayers. They called Myanmar genocide to the Rohingyas.
Most Rohingya refugees have fled to camps around the border of Bangladesh where 300,000 Rohingyas had lived before the last violence occurred on 25 August.
Police chief at Cox's Bazar, Iqbal Hossain, said 550 police have been deployed to the region including 145 Buddhist temples to prevent violence. Police also increased security to Buddhist local residents, and asked them not to panic with the arrival of refugees.
"This is a precautionary measure. We also built checkpoints throughout the district, "he said.
Aid also came to the port city of Chittagong to oversee the temples, including the 300-year-old Kendriya Shima Bihar temple in Ramu, which houses the important Buddhist heritage. The police also patrolled outside the Buddhist temples in Ukia and Teknaf, the closest towns where most of the new arrivals are Rohingya refugees. The district authorities also built a community committee on harmony since the Rohingyas crisis took place.
