Confession: I'm an addict for over 3 months now

in life •  7 years ago

Ever got an addiction? The craving, the infatuation, the constant attention that steals your time, effort and money?

Yes, I've got one, and it’s always on my mind, this new addiction. Initially I thought it would go off, but after I passed the 90 days mark, I started to doubt my own will power. I was quick to notice it, so I started taking note of the time lapsed. I figured I could fight it. But as the days grew more, I knew I was losing the battle.

I’ve overcome many temptations, challenges and obstacles in the past, so I know my own strength. I was initially confident.

And yet, I find myself succumbing to this new addiction.

It’s on my mind the moment I wake up, even before I reach for my phone to check the time. Yes, I would wake up before the alarm clock rings. That’s scary. Sometimes, I even dreamed about it.

And I would think of it before I sleep, often one of my last thoughts. No matter how tired I was throughout the day - meetings, tasks, chores, deadlines, submissions - it popped into my mind, sometimes even just for a split second. But that's enough to kickstart the addiction, and derail me from what I was supposed to do. That’s how the temptations sneaked in most of the time. And it usually went downhill from there.

I cut off communication channels, distant myself from those involved, hoping that I had lesser distractions to deal with. I used apps to monitor my focus, I recalled my meditation lessons from the past, I listened to white noise and music, praying one of it would help me.

Today marks Day #104, but sad to say, I’m still struggling with the addiction. If anything, I've only gotten worse.

And don’t say that I didn’t reach out to friends for help. I did. Some ignored me, which hurt initially, but it’s good. Good because I've spared them from the addiction. You see, others who didn't ignore me eventually found out that they were addicted too, and credited me for their change of behaviour. It’s like a virus, spreading. Some would be repel by it, others would be swayed.

I lost track of how much time I’ve spent on it. Worst, those friends who found similar addiction? We started grouping up. Initially we thought we could support ourselves, but as the impulse grew stronger, we realised we just got deeper into the addiction, justifying to ourselves that we were doing good.

And the triggers, oh the triggers. They are so many of them. News, social media feeds, WhatsApp group chats. It didn't help at all. As a matter of fact, it made the addiction worst. Every corner I look, every turn I make, every flick of my thumb across my FB timeline, it's there to remind me of my moments of weakness.

Honestly. Can I survive this?

Days of Addition: #104

Progress: Still addicted.

My addition? Steemit. :)

Wait, why's Mav posting on Steemit nowadays?

Well, unlike other blogging and social media platform, Steemit is the only platform that allows me to earn cryptocurrency when I engage with it. Yup, one Steem is about USD7, and you, too, can earn Steem Dollars every time you:

Yup, basically it's the very same thing you're doing on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc all along!

The only difference? For once you can earn a nice income on the side!

Sign up for a free Steemit account, and you can thank me by coming back and upvoting this article. And guess what, you will earn Steem too for doing that! #awesome

This is truly one of the best articles I have read on steemit. Addiction it is. The crazy part is we are still unknown to most of the population on earth. When this goes viral it will become Even more interesting. When we have 1 billion people posting on here daily it will become very difficult to obtain steem. That is why it is so important that you post and post frequently now while you’re an early adopter. It is highly advised that any friends and family that you get to join, that they quickly produce are introduce yourself post. That post usually Earns them some STEEM!
Steem On steem nation!

We share the enthusiasm here too in Malaysia. With the various initiatives we're doing and launching, powered by Steemit, the love is gonna spread far, wide and deep (in our pockets).

Have a nice weekend.

Welcome to Steemit-Anonymous and yes, I´m addicted too!^^

No judgement there, buddy! Have a nice weekend!

Well, that's the first step! ;)
Steem on!

yes buddy thats exactly the first step. welcome to steemit bro steem on.

Love it. Terrible addiction. At least you've taken the first step. You've admitted you have a problem. Now, just keep feeding that addiction until you never have to work again. Then get over it. ;)

Now @kwade-tweeling, that's a pretty good prescription for the addiction don't u think? :D

Convenient truth maybe?

@kwade-tweeling, you're making it sound like a good problem, which sad to admit, IT IS!

Have a great weekend!

It sounds to me like your not up to take the 12 step program for addiction recovery.

Barely could get to Step 1 :)

Nicely written bro... got me hook till the end. this addiction seems be persistent over with me... literally few days being active in Steemit!

Haha, as long as we're aware of how we are spending our time, it's probably a healthy addiction. Have a nice weekend!

Well i am addicted too

I'm addicted to you steemit... I admit it. You like a drug in my blood.

if i dont log on to steemit in a day is like am going or loosing. i must admit it am also an addict to steemit.

Hahaha it is REALLY an addiction, except that this can produce some money being addicted to it, that's what my husband says! :)

what??? 😳 ! I mean yeah you can, Up to some extent but health is more than money. And most importantly the Rise is not Immortal. Everyone must try something different time by time.

Justification? Haha.

But yes, you can make money on it. Not often in life can you make money engaging on a social platform like this. Happy times, good addiction!

hehe.... won't be needing help to break this addiction cos i don't want to helped.....just love this present addiction of mine.... steemit addiction...lol loving it

Keepin it real, eh? #stayawesome

I am in it and do you mean Addiction makes money?

yes bro some addictions makes you money instead of costing you money. and example of such addiction that makes you money is steemit.

Most addictions cost money, but Steemit is the other way around. :)

My husband and I are completely addicted and obsessed with steemit as well. There's never a day that we would not be thinking about what post to write, what topic will be good for a podcast. Heck, I even dreamt about my cat having a steemit account! :D

i think i have the worst addiction to steemit. its that serious that i hardly go 30 minutes without logging on to my steemit account. maybe sooner than later i will become addicted to steemit in my dreams at least that would even save me from nightmares at night.

Thanks for being honest, haha!

its a pleasure i must say i love work its awesome good job. i will always follow your work.

Looks like your addiction is worse than mine, haha! At least in my dreams, no cats are cashing out SBDs...

Having said that, it's good that your husband and you have joint interest in something. It's a good way of building bond. :)

Have a nice weekend.

I wish my cats could make some cash rather than eat, sleep, and look at me judgingly. Thanks and you have a nice weekend too! :)

Addiction is addiction, it does not matter when or how it started. But what matters allot is the reality of it which can achieve through the means of empathy and reciprocation.

Creation and learning are the best addictions one can have ! With Steemit you get both and get paid ;)

You can have the cake and eat it!

You know, at a time when I was reading your post I left, it must be horrible to be submerged in an addition and not be able to get out of it, I'm really sorry to say but every day I get up at 3am to check Steemit and read good posts like this , every day at any time of the day I get at least one hour and check and read, I think I am another of the addicts to Steemit hahaha, going out will be a bit difficult if you know you learn many things of interest and also you pay for that, thank you for sharing this publication with this great Steemit family, I am following your account and I invite you to visit my publications and I will be very grateful for your collaboration, since it is a very valuable help to me, part of this income is donated to a foundation of children in extreme poverty here in Venezuela

Good addicts, bro.

And good to know you're using Steemit as a means to help the poor and underprivileged too. Our team in Malaysia are running similar programs, and next week, I'm training about 20 underprivileged teens (orphans, single parent homes, household income below the poverty line) to post and make some pocket money on Steemit. That way, they don't have to rely on homes, and put their skills to good use.

Checking out your account in a bit. Have a nice weekend!

Good, I really congratulate you, it is a very beautiful work, this strengthens the Soul, we can not turn a blind eye to what is happening around us, that is why this initiative to help, well I am your follower and I will be aware of your publications, a hug from Venezuela

Yeah, I've got the addiction pretty bad too. I guess if you're going to be addicted to social media, you might as well be on Steemit where you can make some money at least. Great post!

Yeah, most social media (if not all except Steemit) gives you "vanity" satisfaction. Likes, shares, all just lead to the owners of the social media to make money off our engagement.

Steemit is fair in that sense that you're rewarded for your participation. Super cool.

You are so daring and I swear I really appreciate you from bottom of my heart because even old people don't accept it that I am an Addict. #hats off to you @mavericfoo. I will pray for you and for everyone who is in the net of addiction.. #Stay blessed man :)

Thanks chief.

You are welcome Dear! I really mean it @maverickfoo I have submitted your post for review and I hope this will be resteem by many people.. Because I feel and i believe that your post is original and undervalued ( you didn't got that much up votes that you deserve). So Want this post to be on top and gets its right..

Hello @maverickfoo ! I hope you are doing well.. I had submitted your post for review by #humanbot and #carlgnash but unfortunately it couldn't made because of the category the don't allow steem related category. But he upvoted for you at least. I will try to submit in other plate form to hit your story up... this is the response they..

So kind of you @sohailahmad2525. This is real appreciation in fact. You have put a great effort to promote @maverickfoo real story.. #stay Blessed Sir I followed you now

Thanks @sohailahmad2525 for the effort. Appreciate it.

I guess steemit is the only addiction that doesn't have a negative to it. Considering we're always saying we should never get addicted to anything. But, well I'm glad to get addicted. It's all positive and I'm glad I found my new addiction.

I think there are some healthy habits we can get addicted to too, like working out at the gym, painting, writing, travelling. As long as it's not truly harmful, why not?

Thank you very much sir for sharing this great advice, I certainly didn't think these could be regarded as addictions. My perception has always been that once it's addiction, it's negative.
Thank you very much for this, I've learnt much and at such I'm getting addicted to travelling and much more, and gym???, I'm lazy but I'll try visiting the gym. Thank you once again.

I am Andrew and I am an addict. Hooked myself. Damn, I usually only do that when I go fishing ;)

Fishing is a healthy addiction. :) Gets you out to nature, gives you time to reflect on life.

Just got back, and had a mate who was saying exactly that whilst we were at the lake. He caught his first fish tonight!

Nice one :)

It is 4am where I am. I am responding to your well written post about addiction and clearly I have the same. This is very normal. No need to worry ;)

Haha, that's a good one. Hope you get some good sleep. STEEM is up again, so pretty good way to start the weekend, eh?

Ceh @maverickfoo! Potong Steem (pun intended)! Thought you were referring to porno instead! :D

That one too steeming already... sensationally, sensually steeming.

LOL!

I am addicted to making money... and steemit is my latest addiction.

I believe most here share that issue.

Yeah, it's a nice way to form a groupie. :) Have a nice weekend.

You need to work on your clickbaits as an old addict I'm offended.. Lol
Till I saw your addiction was steemit. I had many things to say but you are just greedy don't worry you are one of the 90% of human being.

It's just for fun. Sorry if I had offended you, @oups. That's definitely not the intention.

I'm bad at humour with my English level. =\
I had an alcohol addiction which is already over, didn't offended at all. Just worried if you talking about real addiction and I was getting prepared to give some advices until seeing it was a joke. Sorry if I mislead

cool down bro. the buddy meant no offense he was just doing it for the fun of it not to offend anyone on this platform. even i was thinking differently until i read the whole write up den i saw his intentions of posting the work

No harm, no foul, chief. On a serious note, although I don't drink (allergic to alcohol), but I've worked with people who suffered with alcohol addiction. Not the easiest thing to overcome.

Big pat on your back, my friend.

Its called OCd(obsessive compulsive disorder) plz go to a phychiatrist and start your treament

Nice picture om...

You are not addicted to steemit as I do lol, in fact steemit is my breakfast and dinner.... I can never do without steemit.

That was a great read @maverickfoo. Steemit is growing and expanding in leaps and bounds.

Just wait until everybody sees the "world" through their Google Glasses! The logical progression of MK Ultra. Thank you--I'm going to share this with my kids. Some suggestions to help with your addiction: take a walk in the woods (without your phone), keep writing Steemit articles, read books (off-line) and listen to music that has soft dynamics and a slower tempo. All of these things make the brain work differently and help you get off of the frenetic device-driven crazy train we're all on. Good luck!

Interesting post.

I've ben a week here on the platform, and i am kinda addicted too. Great post man.

I think am having this kind of addiction too. Am a kind of person who don't like staying in the house buh since I was addicted to this I don't get time to eat let alone to go out to mingle with friends and the funny part is that try those coming to me to learn what I hav been addicted to. Thank God I was able to convince four of my friends to be part of this addiction this week.

I have to confess too. I check steemit the moment I open my eyes in the morning (usually still in bed). Reply comments. Redeem rewards (this is the most awesome and wonderful thing to do in bed... Muahahaha....) Then when I reach office, I am on Steemit again... Whenever I have time, I will be steeming (commenting, replying, posting)... Then before sleep, again repeating the process... So one qualify addict I am, I think.

That's a very healthy addiction you have there Mav! Wish I could write as good as you are. I'll try and see if I can come up with something to write about! :)

This is a financially healthy addiction

Yes I am addicted too! There is no hope! I have surrendered to the addiction!

Hi, im addicted too. Im a newbie, just join steemit for 5 days now. Since i have this acc,i can't stop checking on it. Its like a routine now 😂
