Stop That!

STOP THAT RIGHT NOW!

My daughter jumped. I jumped. In fact most people in ear shot jumped. It was a loud shout and we all looked over to see what the disturbance was.

A fierce and red faced woman was hauling at her son's arm. She was employing that whipping a rope technique which seemed to be causing him a bit of discomfort. He looked to be about four.

He was standing next to a display with some free crackers on it to try. The temptation was obviously too much and he tried to reach a hand up again.

His mum (I think?) grabbed him by the scruff of the neck and shouted spittily next to his face that he had better

My daughter looked on agog. I don't think she was used to seeing a parent haul their kid about like a lobster they were pulling out of the sea or shouting at them with a face an aubergine would be proud of.

There is a mischievous streak in me. It's quite a wide streak and I found I couldn't help but remark to my daughter quite loudly.

Ooft, you will be glad that's not your mummy darlin, eh?

The lady of the purple face looked up sharply. Like a shark in a tin can.

I met her gaze and gave her a wink and a feral smile. Smoke bellowed from her nostrils and the portrait of myself I keep hidden in the attic aged several years as she glared at me.

Me and my girl carried on shopping. We had family staying to help with childcare and chillis had to be purchased to make a fine and spicy feast for them.

We hauled our bounty out to the car park. By a twist of fate our car was quite close to aubergine woman who was yelling at her child whilst loading her shopping into the boot.

I asked my little one to hop into her car seat which she did with gymnastic perfection. As I closed the door on her and made my way round to the drivers side the purple flump flounced over closer.

I suppose you think you were being funny in there?

I think she was attempting to be confrontational.

A hundred cheeky or funny ripostes flitted through my mind but as I looked at her and her lost eyed child some yards behind her I could only shake my head and reply.

No. I am afraid I wasn't.

"Like a shark in a tin can" Ahahahaha, I love it, mate! Found you through your Saturday Beer post, this is the third post of yours I've read and I'm already hooked. Your personality really comes out through your writing and you have quite the way with words, I'll be tuning in daily!

Top notch man! Thank you very much. I quite liked that turn of phrase myself!

How wonderful. I see all sorts of low quality parenting when out and about too, and my little girl (3) often makes the comments. She did a blinder the other day when she saw some horrible chav woman shouting at her kid (probably no older than 3 or 4) in the park over absolutely nothing other than the fact that she (the mum) couldn't control her own internal anger. My daughter says, quite within earshot of her "she's not very nice talking to her little one like that daddy. I'm glad I don't live at her house".

From the mouths of babes.....!!!!

Hehe, awesome. My daughter has done some similar things. Why is she shouting at her baby daddy and the like. Out of the mouths of babes indeed!!

Meesterboom strikes again!! I love looking at your pictures that you made with photo editor and/or photoshop, whichever. Keep posting funny stuff, meesterboom!!

All made on my phone! :O)

Cheers man!

What do you use, out of interest? I've finally upgraded to a phone that can do this kind of stuff, feels like I've been missing out.

There are loads of cool editing apps out there. I use about four or five. PicSay Pro, pixlr express are the main ones

Thanks, I'll check them out

What is incredible is that if people witness one adult treating another that way, someone might intervene... but with children many look the other way. I hope your comments gave that parent some momentary self reflection...

They do don't they! That's the bit that gets me as well. I hope she reflects on it too but I doubt it

Funny post. I hear parenting is quite a painful but hilarious thing!

Painful, hilarious, knackering. .. Its a long list but worth it in the end :O)

They put kids on leashes around here so you don't have to yank their arm! LOL

I have seen the leashes. When ours was younger I contemplated getting one but the missus went nuts at the idea!! Hehe, she is a very modern parent

Another great work dear friend @meesterboom, every home is world dear friend, if that is the reaction of a mother in public I imagine what life should be like inside the house
Have a great day

Ha, I aint never seen that one before! Excellent!

And thank you for visiting @jlufer, Yo uare right she will be a maniac behind closed doors

That was entertaining.

I wonder what the kid really did!?! (Observation is futile without proper context)

Oh I saw, he was just trying to eat lots of the free crackers. He obviously went over an invisible line!

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

I wonder if she feeds him at home? Or maybe he is a glutton (one of the seven deadly sins...at 4 yrs old haha)? Or did he misbehave a dozen times before eating the crackers and that was the last string?

You never know it could have been the last straw in a series of things!! I suspect not though!!

Fun read anyways :)

As always, another fine story sir. I always find it frustrating as hell the way some parents treat their children, when as we all should know children learn the most about behaviour from their parents. So if the parents are dicks... well the kids probably will be as well.
On the other hand, I'm sure your little ones are incredibly well behaved and hopefully tell amazing stories just their old man ;)

She already tells fantastic stories. So she is in the right track hehe :0)

It's a very true thing though. Behavior is indeed learned and if the parents are dicks then the children will learn it as you say!

Oh, she got burned!

I like how you turn everyday stories into captivating reading. It's a gift @meesterboom!

Aw thanks!! I like to put my twist on it and I am glad that it elevates it beyond humdrum!

Good for you and your family and maybe even for the lost eyed child's sake. Bad parenting needs to be called out. Yes, that shitty kid is yours lady, but we the public are going to have to deal with his broken soul, once you are out of his life, so find a way to deal.

That's exactly the way I think. Yes it is your kid but the damage she could cause will be picked up by us all

Ugh, it's the worst when you see a thing like that, poor little boy. I actually recall a similar instance when my own daughter was young where she was the one to loudly (though I don't think the loudly was intended for the woman, but only to be heard over the woman's shrieking) proclaim "I'm glad she's not my mommy!" I felt both pity for the child being shouted at and secretly happy that my daughter got to see how lucky she is, hahaha!

Hehe, I do love the random things or not so radom that they come out with. They have a habit of just saying the truth very loudly! Everytime my daughter does I think, aah thats my girl!! :OD

Great story. Last line was priceless.

Cheers man, it seemed like the only answer!

AHAHAHA! I had to watch videos of crying babies just to stop laughing. Man, those kinds of parents... sheesh! It's going to be an unending cycle I'm afraid. That poor child would grown up to be just like his parent (hopefully not) then the cycle restarts. Makes you think if the same thing happened to her when she was growing up.

She's already not making any friends, I really don't see the point of making more enemies. What she should've done was to take her losses and scurried back home. It's like she's starting a war right after she had been stripped of any armor and weapons--with the Boom-Meister no less! Now, that's someone who should really lament.

We had family staying to help with childcare and chillis had to be purchased to make a fine and spicy feast for them.

OHOHO do I smell a much awaited cooking post coming!? :D

You know I almost did a cooking post!! I made a big fantastical Mexican style feast. It was great. But I feel out of touch with my cooking post mojo!

Her confrontation in the car park was tragic. I genuinely had to stop from giving her fire the oxygen it needed to breathe.

Having a kid though is great for these type of asides in public. I have done it many times. Usually about safety. Ah, small things please me!!

JEEZ!!! Mexican!? GAAAAH. My stomach. It hungers. Why, Boom!? Why??

I'm sure it's just like riding a bike, talking about putting up a cooking post. A souped up, solar-powered, chromatically-engineered bike. But, a bike nonetheless ;)

Those people really have no regard, but I guess you're right, children need to see the harsh reality so that they could avoid emulating it. They are a great deterrent for violence sometimes haha

It was one of my finest Mexican-esque dishes! Chipotle rice, chimichurri, habanero chicken, garlic kale. Loads of stuff. It went down a treat. Even made my own wraps!

Good grief, man! What have I done to you to deserve this, huh!? WHAT!? Gah!! Now look what you made me do! Drooling all over my shirt! Ah jeez... I'm a sucker for Mexican cuisine. I don't know why it is. My kryptonite I tell you!

I will remember that one!! Always handy to know others Kryptonite!! Hehe

Prepare the chalupas when I am Glasgow bound! I am prepared to meet my maker. My (Mexican delicacy) maker that is!

Hop on the next plane and they will be prepared!!! :0D

Don't stop. You had me on the floor hysterical.

Sadly, this is all too true and I have seen it first-hand. The worst part of that is if the State tried to take that poor abused child away, the child would cling to this beast like she was the Madonna.

Upped and Steemed

Cheers man, it is very true. Kids love their parents regardless!!

I know, right?

Lol you responded well. I would have said the same thing to my kid lol. I think it's funny how she wait to get outside to say something.

Yeah, it must have been stewing for some time!

I hope it was just a bad day. I had to drag my 6 year old by the wrist walking home the other day, else she would have run off. People witnessing that probably had their own opinions. It wasn't over eating free crackers though. She threw a wobbly in the library because she choose a library card, then two minutes later wanted the other one and then proceeded with kicking and screaming tantrum when she didn't get her own way. Thankfully not too common an incident. Loved the reference to the picture in the attic. I do like Oscar Wilde.

I love Oscar Wilde too! Particularly that one!

I know, I have been there where my little one is having a wild meltdown and it's all a bit nuts and I have to be really firm. The way she was acting though didn't seem as if it was a bad day. We can but hope though!

Poor lady. Maybe she needs to join you for beer Saturday so she can feel better and treat her son better!?

She might thump me and steal my beer :0/

No. No stealing beer! Lol

Exactly. It's a cardinal sin!!

@meesterboom - Looked up like a shark in a tin can!!! LOL. What style. Not only your wit in the remarks you made (first one to your daughter and the end with a nonchalant "No. I am afraid I wasn't") but your entire narration style is so amazing. You do have a mischievous and satirical streak in you. Thanks for sharing. Upvoted

Update at my end - I have posted a blog with a question on Innocence- Does it really exist? based on my original wildlife photos and musings. I would be honored if you take a look when you have time. Your valuable comments will be eagerly awaited. Thanks

I thank you for your very kind comments!! I quite like the shark in a tin can one hehe.

I will go and look just now :0)

I just hope that she learned something about parenting from you and becomes a better mom. Real moms don't do the stuff (mostly) she was doing so I wonder if she was the mom. In any case, children are not to be treated like that. I hope she does better job at it. I just hope...

I am pretty certain she was the mum. She could have been having a bad day but it just looked like the normal routine. I hope too that she realises that we should treat our kids as we would want treated ourselves. It's quite simple

I hope it was just a bad day then because this being routine is not a nice situation.

I hope the same!

That's a hilarious story but at the same time sad. I hate seeing parents behave badly towards their kids at the store. Especially when they are physically rough. It's an interesting thing because I know really great parents who behave that way in public. Like they are so self-conscious about their kids behavior that the overcompensate by fussing at their kids over every little thing. Your reaction to the woman confronting you was perfect.

I hate seeing it too. I know what you mean, some try to overcompensate as they are self conscious. It's a horrible thing to watch. I hated it even before parenthood!

Good for you, nasty woman, wonder how she treats that poor little soul in private

I suspect he gets a leathering in private, you could sort of read the signs.

That;s really sad to think about

It is, a shame

Fingers crossed the little one is OK

I am sure he will be but will probably think that that's the way you treat people and grow up like that. Then again, it's not impossible to be different so all is not lost!

I didn't grow up that way after being beaten as a child, hopefully the mother sorts her temper out

love it. but hey, maybe the child had a severe gluten allergy, and it was also sending the mother into a panic mode not knowing how to control the situation. you never really know(probably not) but there might be other things going on boiling over. great story telling!

Hehe, in that case he might have had a car park allergy too given that he was getting pelters in the car park as well lol!!

I like your writing style

Thank you, I appreciate it!

My pleasure (: I'll be checking more of your work now for the the future

Likewise :0)

wow amazing resteemed ur post

Hey hey, thanks man :0)

Those parents with the shory trmpers and sharp toungesdrive me mad, I know that it might have been the last straw, but you are right, it probably wasn't, the poor child in for a life of "fun"!

Oh yes, the fun will never end and then a new cycle will start!!

I too see this often not only with parents but also with school teachers. I have found myself sometimes slipping into a negative role and later reflecting and regretting. So I am sure your comments helped maybe pull her back into reality and maybe she will reflect on how she could do that better next time! ... and even making comments can be courageous instead of just walking on by. Maybe it helped changed the situation for the better. Thanks for the story!

You are welcome. I thought when she tried to confront me that not knowing the situation it was better just to not try and one up on her. Better for both of us!!

I agree ~ best to leave with as much positive energy left on the table as possible. That is the charitable way!

Way to go man! You couldn't have done it better!
It's horrible how some people raise their children, I'm glad you stood up on yourself!

And as always there is something with your writing I really enjoy, thanks for sharing your storys :)

Cheers dude, it was only a little sarkiness but it made me happy :0)

Your stuff never gets old! (only you do - hahaha kidding!!) :D

But hey, today's milestone day for me. Here's that post: My first 30 days on Steemit! Over 3000+ posts!

Nice, creative post as usual! Talk soon.

Wow, that's a lot!! Will have a look :0)

Checked it!! I thought I had replied to this as well but my replies are a little wonky!

That's a lot of posts, well done!

Haha thanks :) You actually did rey to this comment twice :P

See!! My comments have been playing up!!! :0)

Haha yeah sometimes it can be crazy.

Just imagine the struggle for those bloggers who get 200+ new comments.. I can't wait until I get that so I can prove to those bigger blogs that it's possible to reply to 200 comments per post.

Exciting times!!

I went through a phase where I was getting a lot more before the hardfork. It was tough but I managed!! I am sure you will cruise through it too!

Beast! Yeah I see youre one of the few with over 10-15k posts. Dedication!

I really want to up the engagement on my blog. Going to make that one of my goals in the next month.

Oofty, yeah engagement is a tricky one! I wish you luck. Definitely answering everyone is the way to go. I know I always feel disappointed when I comment on a list and essentially get ignored

"I met her gaze and gave her a wink and a feral smile."

this video is so on point :))

Haha, it is in many ways, the why why why is hilariously true :0)

Aw man it gets better and better!!

it's one of louie's best bits

Yes, he really need to stop that!

What is wrong with society these days? When my son was young and doing something wrong. I told him to stop and he did, mostly. There was none of this loud crying and misbehaving in public. I think it's because I would spank him in public and he would get embarrassed. He grew up into a decent man, so I have no regrets. Being too soft on kids is not helping them. It's not preparing them for the 'real world'.

I don't think spanking in public is preparing for the real world but each to their own!
