इस प्रकार दुसरे दिन से उन गवैयों ने गुरु अनंगदेव के दरबार में भजन गाने के लिए आना छोड़ दिया । जब वे नहीं आए तो क्षमाशील गुरु ने उन्हें बुलवाया । किन्तु जिनके मन में अविनय ने जड़ें जमा ली थीं, ऐसे गवैये क्यों समझने लगे ? उन्होंने कहलवाया – “हम नहीं आएगें । दरबार की शोभा हमारे ही कारण है । हम दरबार में भजन न गाएं तो दरबार ही न भरे । और तो और साक्षात् गुरु नानक साहब के दरबार की शोभा भी उस समय के गायकों के ही कारण थी ।”

कृतघ्न तथा अविनयी गवैयों के व्यवहार को गुरु अनंगदेव ने क्षमावान होने के नाते सहन कर लिया था, किन्तु अब जब उनका अविनय इतना बढ़ गया कि स्वयं गुरु नानक देव साहब के दरबार का भी वे अपमान करने लगे तब उन्होंने शाप दिया – “ये कृतघ्न तथा अविनयी गवैये भूखे मरेंगे । इनके बच्चे भी अनाज के दाने-दाने के लिए तरसेंगे ।”

इसके पश्चात् गुरु अनंगदेव ने अपने शिष्यों को ही भजन गाने के लिए कहा । सत्कार्य के लिए कभी लोगों की कमी नहीं पड़ती । कहीं से ढोलक आई, कहीं से मंजीरे, कही से खड़ताल और सुमधुर भजन की तान आकाश को गुंजायमान करने लगी । दरबार में संगीतामृत तथा भजनानन्द की अमृत वर्षा होने लगी ।

उधर बलवन्त और सत्ता दोनों अविनयी गवैये अपने साज-सामान लेकर गाने बैठते और बड़ा प्रयत्न करते कि लोग उनका संगीत सुनें किन्तु लोग तो क्या, कोई प्राणी भी उनका संगीत सुनने नहीं जाता ।

इस प्रकार अपने अविनय का फल उन दोनों गवैयों को हाथों-हाथ मिलने लगा । वे भूखे मरने लगे । उनके बाल-बच्चे दाने-दाने के लिए तरसने लगे ।

आँखों के आगे से भ्रम का पर्दा हटा । अविनय का स्थान पुन: विनय लेने लगा । उन्होंने गुरु के सामने अपनी प्राथेना प्रेषित की – “हमें केवल भोजन तथा वस्त्र ही प्रदान कीजिए, हम दरबार में गाने के लिए तैयार हैं ।”

किन्तु अनंगदेव उन अविनयी गवैयों को पूरी शिक्षा देना चाहते थे, ताकि भविष्य में फिर वे कोई उद्दंडता न करें, अविनय न करें । अत: उन्होंने अपने शिष्यों से कहा – “ख़बरदार ! गुरु नानकदेव की गद्दी का अपमान करने वाले इन अविनयी गवैयों की ओर से क्षमा मांगने मेरे पास कोई न आए । यदि कोई भूल कर भी आया तो उसकी दाढ़ी-मूंछ मुंडाकर, मुंह काला करके, उल्टे गधे पर बिठाकर गावं में घुमाया जाएगा ।”

इतना भयानक दण्ड सहन करने के लिए कौन तैयार हो ? बेचारे गवैये हाथ पर हाथ धर कर अपनी भूल का पश्चात्ताप करने लगे ।

अन्त में उन गवैयों ने लाहोर के एक सिख भाई, जिनका नाम लद्धा था, उन्हें खोज निकाला और उनसे प्रार्थना की – “भाई, आप दयावान है । गुरु अनंगदेव आपका बड़ा सम्मान करते हैं । हम पापी हैं । हमसे भूल हो गई । हम अपने अविनय के लिए घोर पश्चात्ताप करते हैं । भविष्य में गुरु के प्रति किसी प्रकार का अविनय भाव भूलकर भी अपने ह्रदय में नहीं लाएंगे । बस, एक बार हमें क्षमा दिला दीजिए ।”

भाई लद्धा यह जानते थे कि गुरु का वचन स्थिर होता है । किन्तु उन्हें उन भूखे मरते गवैयों पर दया आई । उन्होंने सोचा कि एक सत्कार्य करने का यह अवसर आया है, इसे अवश्य करना चाहिए । चाहे कितना भी कष्ट हो ।

यह विचार करके उन्होंने स्वयं ही अपनी दाढ़ी-मूंछे कटवा ली । मुख पर कालिख पोत लिया और गधे पर उलटी तरफ मुंह करके चल दिए । गुरु के ग्राम की उन्होए प्रदक्षिणा की और फिर गुरु के समक्ष पहुंच गए ।

गुरु अनंगदेव ने अपने प्रिय शिष्य लद्धा के इस प्रकार आया देख सारा माजरा समझ लिया और बोले – “तुम आए हो, तो मैं उन गवैयों को क्षमा करता हूँ । किन्तु स्मरण रखो विनय जीवन का श्रंगार है । कितनी भी बड़ी योग्यता हो, कितना भी ज्ञान हो, यदि ह्रदय में अविनय जागा तो सब कुछ नष्ट हो जाता है । विनय के अभाव में मनुष्य का जीवन व्यर्थ है ।”

बलवंत तथा सत्ता नामक उन गवैयों को गुरु अनंगदेव ने फिर से अपने दरबार में आश्रय देकर कहा – “भाई, मैं तुम्हारा अहित नहीं चाहता । मैं तो तुम्हारा हित ही चाहता था । इसलिए मैं तुम्हारे अहंकार को नष्ट करना चाहता था । अब तुम्हारे ज्ञान-नेत्र खुल गए हैं तो जिस मुख से तुमने गुरु के प्रति अविनय के शब्द कहे थे, उसी मुख से उनके गुणगान करो और सुखी रहो ।”

अत:

विद्या ददाति विनयम्, विनयाधाति पात्रताम् ।
पात्रताद्धनमाप्नोति, धनाद्धर्म: तत: सुखम् ।।

विद्या विनय प्रदान करती है । विनय से पात्रता, पात्रता से धन, धन से धर्म तथा धर्म से सुख प्राप्त होता है ।
