You are not alone! Based on the average of three polls taken on the matter, a whopping 72% of people admit to urinating in the shower. Gross! Or is it?
Many people know that urine is not toxic (excluding those with infections), but are there any benefits to peeing in the shower? Or is it just okay to do since it happens to be sterile?
Benefits to Urinating in the Shower
• It is cleaner – for you and your bathroom
If you are going in the shower, then there will be less pee and pubes all over your bathroom (talking mostly to guys here). Not to mention the water washing you as you go, especially helping women who don’t have to worry about mixing gross contaminates in when they’re wiping.
• It saves money and the environment
Less flushing, less water use, less money spent, enough said. But maybe a little visual will help you get it down:
- Average toilet flush: 2.6 gallons of water
- Average dishwasher cycle: 5 gallons of water
- Average laundry cycle: 30 gallons of water
- Average home swimming pool: 450 gallons of water
So, if you peed in the shower once a day for a year, you could do about 190 more dishwasher cycles, or wash about 32 more loads of laundry, or fill an average sized swimming pool 2 more times. And that is just one person! If you live with a large family, just imagine the savings you could have…
• Better sex
Okay, this one is probably a stretch, but I had to include the quote from Lauren Roxburgh, a fascia specialist: “Women who squat and pee in the shower engage pelvic floor muscles, which can actually lead to better sex.”
So if you are looking for ways to defend your peeing in the shower to your friends then take my advice: a) Use the list of benefits above to help. b) Aim for the drain (as Mel Gibson put it, “aim small, miss small.”) c) Get new friends – why are you talking about peeing in the shower?

I don't regularly pee in the shower, however I have. Not ashamed of it either. :)

There are two types of people in the world. Those that admit to peeing in the shower, and those that lie about it.

:) I think that can apply to washing hands in the bathroom too...

Don't forget to calculate in the amount of water that flushes down the shower drain as you are peeing. But it's definitely less than 2.6 gallons worth. The alternative solution is to not flush the toilet until someone has to poop :)

I was considering the water that goes down in the shower, but also thinking how most of us probably just stand in the shower for a minute anyway because the warm water (from the shower) just feels nice, whether or not we pee in it, so decided not to include it. I can't do the if it's yellow let it mellow thing - maybe too much asparagus?
