As a busy working mother, alone time is a very rare and precious commodity. Every now and then, I get a weekday off work, which is a real treat. As much as I absolutely adore spending time with my family and friends, I find that it is very healthy to enjoy a bit of solitude from time to time. And that is precisely what I’ve been doing today!
Most of the time when I get a “free” day, I jump at the chance to go out exploring outdoors with my friends while my daughters are at school. Today, however, I decided to stay at home to catch up on some housework and allow myself to clear my head and do a little thinking.
The fire is burning warm and bright and the smell of food, candles, and diffused essential oils fills my home right now
This time of year can be very discouraging because I work long days and it’s dark outside by the time I get home. This leaves me with very little motivation to do things outside of my normal routine, which generally involves getting ready for the next busy day all over again.
I’ve been blasting music and dancing around while I do my housework and I have dinner in the slow-cooker for when my family gets home. There is something incredibly gratifying and oddly relaxing about being able to work alone at my own pace. My house looks and smells very nice and it gives me a satisfying sense of accomplishment. This is not something that I get to do on a daily basis because I work so much! I suppose I could do it all, but I’m just not a “super mom” like some. Over the years, I’ve learned to accept that, and I am perfectly fine with it ;)
Now that my housework is somewhat in order, I think I’ll spend a little time with my guitar while I still have the house all to myself!
Do you think it’s important to spend time alone? If so, how do you like to enjoy your alone time? I’d like to hear about it!
This is SO relatable! I just did all that you wrote last weekend and there is nothing more satisfying than a clean, good-smelling house, the time to do what you love to do in between the chores, AND making a damn good dinner. By yourself. I've been so busy at work lately, and still trying to make time to go to the gym that I've neglected a few chores. I finally got my Mondays off back when my boss returned from her maternity leave. Whew. Thanks for keeping it real! I think we are all super moms in our own way.

I’m glad I’m not the only one that actually enjoys the opportunity to catch up on domestic life and sit back to enjoy the products of my labor, haha. I think you’re right- super moms come in all forms! Glad you’re able to take some time for yourself too!! :)

Yes! I know it may not seem ideal to some, but I've been waking up a little early to get some yoga in. When I first started doing it I was like, "ahh, what the hell am I doing to myself?" But now it really does give me that sense of calm before all the crazy starts for the day. Haha.
Does the guitar playing mean we'll hear a song soon? Huh huh huh? 😀
Glad you got some time, and your house looks amazing. Come clean mine?? Ha ha ha.

Oh man, Ash, I truly envy your willpower! You have become a diet and exercise super ninja!!! ;) Surely my adorable and innocent niece and nephew don't dig into your alone time ;) Hahaaaa!!! I bet the morning yoga is a nice way to have a brief bit of time to yourself and to just breathe before the craziness ensues. Good for you for making the time in your busy mama schedule to have a moment. :)

It has definitely been a great mental relaxer. Not only that but has helped with balance issues, which has always been something I've struggled with. It's pretty cool and kind of addicting! The kids will sometimes wake while I'm doing it (they have that sixth sense that mommy's doing something relaxing, haha) so of course I turn into an awesome bridge they can crawl through. Lol!

What's this "alone time" you speak of? Having three boys 4 and under could be why i dont know this phrase. I love my quiet time in the shower though. Sometimes i just stand in there and think without being interrupted by "Mom".

Oh you poor thing-I know you have your hands full and it's going to be a long road ahead! I promise it gets better once they start school and you get a tiny bit of time to yourself. I know it's cliche and I know you've heard it a thousand times, but enjoy them while they're so small and sweet. Everyone used to tell me that and I didn't believe it at the time. Then one day I woke up and mine had turned into giant little humans! (Is that an oxymoron, lol?) I remember the sweet relief of being able to take a shower or go to the bathroom alone, even if it was just for a few minutes.
