Smoky Mountain is infamous here in the Philippines. It's a dumpsite but also the main source of food for thousands of poor families living in the capital - Manila.
There was one British News Executive who once visited the country and pass by the dumpsite on her way to her hotel. She came back the following day as she could not believe what she saw. She cried there and then we she saw the angelic eyes that her presence has invited - the eyes of hungry children eating food from the dumpsite.

It didn't took long before she came back to the Philippines. She left her high paying job, and established a foundation to help the poor families scavenging food from the mountain of garbage. Today, she is still here, her foundation has grown. She now owns a building which houses classrooms to educate the less privileged kids as well as their parents. She is known in the community as the Angel of Smoky Mountain.
The news that our plastic garbage has ended in the stomach of a dead whale, or became a ring around the body of a turtle, or a thorn in the mouth of a penguin are not new. This happens every day in the lives of animals living in the sea but nobody seems to care. Life goes on.

The reason why we remain blind to the sufferings of the helpless animals of the oceans is that we don't suffer the consequences. What if you go home and your house if full of disgusting smelly garbage? What if your kids just eat plastic for dinner? Or your wife was poisoned by the water she just drank?
The real problem is that we are disconnected. Because of this disconnection, we don't see, feel, smell, taste and hear the damaging effects of our actions. It has been said that something as small as the flutter of a butterfly's wing can ultimately cause a typhoon halfway around the world. We know its true but we don't change our ways. We blame it to the devil, who cunningly outwits us into a meaningless life. But this blame is the kind of trap that the devil wants us to fall into. We have not reach the tipping point yet. Its time to awaken ourselves from our slumber and take control of our lives and everything around us.
