How AI Helps Visually impaired People To Have A Better LifesteemCreated with Sketch.

Artificial Intelligence is one of the top technologies that will change the world(it already started it), the use cases of AI are literally unlimited, like healthcare, data security, fraud detection, marketing, self-driving cars(one of the most exciting innovations that tries to make human life much easier and safer), road maps, etc... which are all wonderful, but one of the fields that is really interesting and nice, is when AI acts as a set of powerful tools to help impaired people. a couple of days ago I got to read an article about the ways AI will help visually impaired people.

How does it work?

In this case, the whole idea behind this technology is to give information to the users about their external environment and the objects that are surrounding them.the basic is same as the technology used in self-driving cars(which analyses information about the environment accurately and makes decisions based on the data that is received. the way it can be implemented could be different.

for example, orcam focuses on reading books, newspapers, etc... which will open lots of doors and provides a vast amount of options for blind people, they can read news, books and whatever they desire.

Known Face Recognition

another feature that they can is the 'face recognition' which let you know who is standing before you, this feature for sure can help visually impaired people to have a life with higher quality social communications. the only thing you need to do is to add the person that you want to get notified later when meeting again.

Object Identification

Source

this feature allows you to add an object like, different credit cards, keys, pictures and any other object to the database and later on identify that by kwwping it before the camera.

AI and Social Media

Source

AI could also help blinds in intraction with people on different social medias like Facebook(which takes AI serious especially in term of helping this kind of users). with this feature, pictures will be described to users completely, including information like number of people in the picture, the theme, objects in the picture, number of likes and comments,etc..
(a video about use of AI in helping blinds)

Conclusion

New technologies like Big Data, Blockchain, and AI are changing the world in ways that can be both useful and harmful(if not being used properly) to human being, it is us that decide how to use that, and seeing such improvement in science that help everyone to have a better life is always promising to a better feature.

But what if AI will become self aware?

I think that is the risk human being is taking, and if that happens, they probably would do a better job than us:)

but wouldnt they think that we are only a problem. all we do is to make wars with each another?

we are not all problems, but we are damaging our environment and each other a lot. so they might think that

Personally i am against AI or at least experiments that lead to make AI self aware machines

I think it is worth the risk, there is so much benefit for Human, of course every technology has its dark side too

like the nuclear power. On one side it can destroy thousands of lifes but on second side it can produce MW of energy

Exactly

Amazing

Amazing article,
Let me suggest to check the following to:
for example, OrCam's smart glasses for the visually impaired is probably the best wearable low vision aids technology for those with sight difficulties.
But it applies to even larger special needs audiences such as the Blind and reading difficulties and partially sighted people.
