The build from factory to show car.

DFROST is a show car i started to build back in the 90s, back then it was loud and in your face mods, lol. I got this car in 1998 it was my first car that wasn’t a hand me down. i researched and found this car was what i wanted for the cash money i had to spend. I was obsessed with 4wd traction at the time and even though i wanted an EVO III (GSR was as good as it got in Australia), this was as close as i could get.

The 1990 Ford Laser TX3 Turbo 4WD. Sporting a 1.8 litre BPT motor that is commonly found in the Mazda 323 factory. basically this whole vehicle is a re branded Mazda 323. Below are the basic specs attained from automobile catalog and some photos of the factory vehicle

Ford Laser TX3 Turbo 4WD, manufactured or sold in 1990, version for Australia (since March), 3-door hatchback body type, 4WD (four-wheel drive, 4x4), manual 5-speed gearbox, displacement: 1840 cm3 / 112.5 cui, advertised power: 117 kW / 157 hp / 159 PS ( DIN ), torque: 206 Nm / 152 lb-ft. characteristic dimensions: outside length: 4270 mm / 168.1 in, width: 1695 mm / 66.7 in, wheelbase: 2500 mm / 98.4 in. reference weights: base curb weight: 1180 kg / 2601 lbs

After owning the car for a few months i started modifying my TX3 exhaust front mount intercooler and BOV were the first things to be done. Then it was time to get some bodywork sorted as the looks of the vehicle were somewhat lacking for my tastes. a set of chrome wheels and the first rendition of the car was underway, but it would not be the end of the build, not by a long shot.

My TX3 in its first form.

From here the mods started coming thick and fast engine work wise the list stood like this. VG30DET T3 turbo, turbo back 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust and manifold, custom intercooler, Blitz blow off valve. 14-15psi boost with a cabin controlled boost switch, Unichip computer mod, Bosch in-tank fuel pump, malpassi fuel pressure regulator, surge tank, K&N filter and cold air induction.

Body work and taken a leap forward with the addition of an EVO 5 wing custom fitted with chrome dipped crossbars. sideskirts, custom down force lip extensions, Custom round taillights and Mazda Austina indicators. chrome detailing, and a butt load of airbrushing inside and out, featuring iceman (xmen) on the bonnet to go with the frosty theme. the interior was treated to some themed trimming also.

While i liked the look of the car at the time it still needed something else, it was missing something i wanted... round headlights. After a bit of mucking about i managed to fit and customize a set of R32 GTR headlight converters to fit

All of this was done by 2001 and then the car started the car show scene which was quite big back then. from Auto salon, GLOW, small car sunday and many more shows, this car hit most of them grabbing a few trophies along the way. There were plenty of over the top cars at these events, it was a great time to be into cars. This was all before the harsh crack down on modified vehicles in Australia.

We headed down to the snow one year with DFROST so we could view her in her natural environment and hit the slopes for a bit of a snowboard.

Throughout this build i had been chasing the cover of cars magazines HOT 4s, Fast fours and rotaries, etc. Every time i got close to being worthy of gracing the cover the bar would be raised. I needed to do something extreme to gain the stamp of approval. The plan was devised to make the car full wide body, custom everything even more than it was, i was determined to do what it would take to make that cover of the magazines. The car was pulled off the road and about 8 months later it emerged as this, the final rendition of DFROST.

Along with the new Wheels which are 18" Custom painted 6 spoke rims, the bodywork included shaved door handles and door strips, mirror operated door handles, Customised front bar with round headlight conversion, full custom 3" wide body modifying almost every panel including front gaurds, skirts, rear gaurds, and rear pods and a race fuel filler.

Did the car make the cover? Nope. The bar was raised yet again, so back to the lab again for DFROST. I was preparing to make this TX3 a targa top and modify the bodywork again…. But then I asked myself is this all worth it? I had already sunk way too much money into this vehicle and it just kept breaking gearboxes with the amount of power it had going to the wheels. The gearboxes are synonymous with breaking in these and many 4WD cars. I thought enough was enough and decided to retire the car from the scene completely and focus on a new drift AE86 project, but more on that later.

For now DFROST lies in a cryogenic state awaiting a cure for weak gearboxes and my want to restore her to roadworthy condition or possibly selling her off. Until any of these things happen she will stay asleep in storage.

Dude that car was pimp! Those custom graphics are crazy, and those wheels are sick. Don't feel bad, we all have projects that we have invested way too much money, and time into.

Thanks @vilmore, it was a long and hard road with that car, lol. maybe i will get around to her again some day. have you built any cars ? what kinda cars are you into ?

I use to be into off road stuff. I still have an old jacked up mud truck parked out back. We have a lot of mud here in, Oregon. It's an old, Ford Ranger with lots of mods like V8, beefy axles, big tires, and about 12 inches of lift. Kind of looks like a mini monster truck.. lol

Nice, you should post a pic up of your 4x4 for us to see, you should also do a write up on it much like i have here as well. im into all forms of motorsports and vehicles so interested to see other peoples creations. how long has it been since you took her out for a mud run?

im quite mechanically minded so have always loved all sorts of machinery. I have some mates that are into 4x4ing lots of space down under for that kind of thing :) one mate even started a business selling 4x4 stuff, but he moved to Adelaide (interstate).

Yeah having a chance to go offroading in, Australia would be like a dream vacation. I can only imagine the fun you guys have over there. As for the mud truck, life priorities have kind of taken over. I have not been out on an adventure for a couple of years; although I look forward to doing so in the future. Yeah thats a cool idea. One of these days I will pull the truck out, and revamp it for some more fun. I will do a small write up on it.

where i am its like 20 to 30 min in most directions and you are in 4x4 territory , lol.

i have had simiilar things with my life path, had a spine surgery mid last year and have been slowly getting back into being able to drive at all let alone how i used to (drift/race). but it all starts slow mate. if you really want it in your life you will find a way to work it in there, even if its just a small outing once every 6 months to a year. thats all i have been able to manage, but im hoping i can do more soon.

Sorry to hear that, back injuries can be difficult to pull through. Life is never the same, just different. I have had a similar on going issue for over a decade. Just hang in there, and keep thinking happy thoughts.

Thanks @vilmore all good mate have to just take in all in your stride n keep keeping on, lol. yeah it can be hard sometimes though, feels like you are no longer yourself and you have to rebuild who you are from the ground up. but if you are lucky you stay grateful for what you have.

That's also why i say you should 'treat yo self' every now and again, lol.

Anyone else notice the MKIV Supra in one of the pictures?

hey @nelkeljdm, thanks for the comment, yeah that was one of the guys in our car club we used to run back in the day. that supra was pretty animal, single turbz converted and plenty of kw pumpin out of it. very tame ono the looks, just wheels from memory. what cars are you into ? done any builds? what you drive ?

hey @mfxae86, thanks for the reply! Pretty awesome. I'll definitely be getting myself a Supra soon. I currently own a '93 R32 GT-R, '97 RX7 FD3S Touring X, '97 RX7 FD3S Type RS, '91 MR2 SW20 and Nissan Juke Turbo.. I run a youtube channel called NelkelJDM have a sizable following and focus on DIY projects for all of my buils. Take a look at my channel trailer that will give you an understanding :)

Wow, I typed out a whole long comment and linked my video. Pushed post now I see my comment is gone but the video stayed! Good job Steemit! Haha. I currently own an R32 GTR, 2 x RX7 FD3S and a Toyota MR2 SW20.. Looking at expanding my JDM collection with a GTO, Supra, NSX, 200sx, 300zx in the near future :)

sux about your comment being deleted. nice trailer though. Sweet set of rides you have there, i have always wanted a 32GTR. also good expansion pack you are looking at getting :) you just street them or do you do circuit work ?

My collection consists of a Nissan Stagea, and Toyota AE86 and this thing, lol. i also had a exa with a ca18det. I used to do circuit work but mainly just street run my rides these days.

funny thing when i look at your comment in my "replies" section it looks like a different reply, i just cant read more than the first line or so. thats so weird

Wow a stagea, that is really cool. RB25 version? Or the Unicorn Autech RB26? :) It's a long story, I'm actually throwing together a video within the weeks to come to talk about my car history and why I have so many right now. I'm basically just a die hard JDM car fan and bit the Japanese auction import bug in 2014 when I bought my GT-R from Kobe, Japan in an auction run and imported here to South Africa. Since then I've been scouting and picking up a couple cars. Currently just modifying as I've been on the grind and can't get out to events for the next couple of months but plans for the GT-R would be light autocross and circuit racing. The RX7's are fast street and the MR2 I'm basically doing a vintage electronics/parts setup where I'll be modifying the car with early 90's Apexi, HKS and Greddy/Trust parts. I want to know what it felt like to drive a modified JDM car in the early 90's.

The Stagea is the RB25DET RS version, so its RWD not the 4WD version. i have recently put on a hks3037 and some support work getting her up to the 280rwkw mark. it peaked at 301rwkw but tuned down for safety.... its plenty fast though. raced a 32GTR and pegged him top end. but i will do a write up on the Stag later like i have with DFROST here.

sounds like you have each car planned out quite well. having a good plan is the hardest part of the build i rekon. after you know what you want the rest is easy... well kind of, lol.

track work is definitely a favorite of mine, im a bit over drag racing, but when you get into the groove out on the track or winding roads and it all comes together and flows smoothly.... oh man that is heaven, lol.

im very interested to see your builds come together, make sure you post your progress and some track footage too. we need to build up the car community here on steemit :)

Love this car... it’s awesome!

It's a sick car!

Thanks @tngflx, you wanna buy it? lol. do you have any auto projects or builds ?
