Two angles of the same thing

I remember that once one of our friends in the school argued with the teacher about the ill wills the Internet has brought. The student argued that Internet has made it easy for the criminals to contact each other without crossing the boundaries physically. He further argued that intimate scenes of different kinds have a bad effect on the young generation. The student listed many drawbacks of the Internet. The teacher listened silently to him for some time and then replied with a beautiful and relevant analogy. The teacher asked the kid in a funny way,” Do you have a knife at your home?”. The student replied in affirmative. The teacher then asked the student that whether the knife can hurt or not. The student said that knife can definitely hurt.

The teacher then asked,”why do you have a knife at home if it hurts?”. The student argued that knife can definitely hurt but it also helps us in many ways. The student said we keep that knife to cut vegetables, fruits and other stuff which makes it very useful for us and we try to avoid the bad use of it. The teacher then argued in favor of the Internet by using the same analogy. The teacher said that just like a knife the Internet can be used in a bad and good way. It depends on the person using it. If someone wants to use it for useful purposes he/she can use it and if someone wants to look at the bad side of it, it can be used for bad purposes as well.

There are always two or more angles to see an object but it depends on the person who sees it. Let me give you the example of the “water in the glass”. Two people were asked for their views about the water in the glass. The person optimistic in nature said that the glass is half filled and the person pessimistic in nature said that the glass is half-empty. I don’t mean that we should ignore the negative side of things as the negative side of things help us take precautionary measures against its bad effects but we should keep on reminding ourselves that too much negativity wastes one’s energy to better exploit the positive side of things.
