English for Beginners - TEFL

in life •  7 years ago

In this series of posts I aim to help teach anybody who would like to learn English. In this globalised world we live in, English is vital for a better future. It is a fact that if you have a good ability of English, you will get yourself a better job, so please feel free to use my posts to learn or just practice your English.

I'm an English teacher in Thailand, and I have an English degree from the University of Leeds. I have been teaching full time for 4 years and I really enjoy it. I have taught in Colombia and Brazil, and now I teach at a school in Bangkok. I also teach online, so if anybody would like extra tuition, we could arrange a time for a videocall/class, and I take cryptocurrencies as payment.

The worksheet below that I've created is for beginners, but if you would like a more advanced one on any grammar topic, just comment and I will upload one. Please feel free to download and print the worksheet off, or just work the answers out and write them in a notebook. If you have any questions, or you would like the answers, just comment and I will get back to you. Thanks and I hope you enjoy, @mojorisin

For or Since

Many second language speakers get these mixed up, but the simple rule to remember is:

For shows the length of time of the action:
• He has worked there for six months.
• I have only been here for ten minutes.

Since shows the time that the action began:
• He has worked there since February.
• I have been here since ten o’clock.

Change the following sentences to introduce since in place of for. Then make whatever changes are necessary. (Use today as an example)

  1. She has been sick for three days. ….She has been sick since Friday.

  2. We have been living here for three days. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

  3. John has worked for that firm for three days. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………

  4. I have not seen him for several days. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………

  5. I have not eaten anything for two days. …………………………………………………………..……………………………………….

  6. We have been planning this trip for a year. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………

  7. It has been raining for eight hours. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………

  8. I have not smoked a cigarette for two days. …………………………………………………………………………………………………..

  9. We have been waiting for you for two hours. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………....

  10. He has been in hospital for almost a month. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Now change these sentences to introduce for instead of since. Then make whatever changes are necessary.

  1. He has been absent since Monday. ………..He has been absent for three days……………..
  2. We haven’t seen them since January. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………
  3. We have lived in the same house since 1999. …………………………………………………………………………………………………….....
  4. They have been friends since high school. …………………………………………………………………………………………………....
  5. It has been snowing steadily since last night. …………………………………………………………………………………………………...
  6. They have been living with her parents since they were married. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………..
  7. He has worked for that firm since 1987. …………………………………………………………………………………………………….....
  8. I have not seen her since last week. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………
  9. The dog hasn’t eaten anything since Wednesday. …………………………………………………………………………………………………...
  10. They haven’t sent any money since last summer. …………………………………………………………………………………………………....

Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed the exercise. I will continue to post English language worksheets, and they'll become gradually more difficult. Good luck.
