School shootings and what's going on with our youthsteemCreated with Sketch.

It seems that since the early 90s, school shootings have become the norm in our school systems. Now, I do know there were some before the 90s but since then, it has become an horrible epidemic nightmare we can't seem to wake up from. Some yell, gun control, others mental illness, some bad parenting, politics and the list goes on and I'm not saying no to any of those possible causes - as a matter of fact, we need to look at all those to figure out what's really going on.

Take gun control for example, there are lots of guns available to just about everyone these days, perhaps they've always been available but maybe our kids today are under a lot of stress. As parents we tend to think that your kids don't have the world under their shoulders like we do but if you think about it, they are growing up and have been growing up in a world (at least in the the U.S.) where they are expected to go through school, go to college and become somebody. Mind you, this is what was expected from all of us but what is causing their edge, why are some kids on edge. Has the edge always been there but the guns are more accessible to them? We use to think that violent movies and or games could suggest this into our kids heads but today, could this be true with the Internet. Remember that the Internet did begin in the mid 90s. It used to be that bullying mean getting your lunch being taken, getting beat up in front of your friends, your money would be taken, you would suffer embarrasment because you were poor, looked weird or looked like a nerd, remember the 80s movies did document this in a fun way but in the heart of it all, it did show what really happens in schools. We have all been kids that have walked the same schools these kids are currently walking, so what's changed? What's changed, I ask?

I got teary eyed this morning I saw kids being driven to schools as they looked happy and parents of course, with a concern in the back of their minds for what happened yesterday could happen anyday in any of our towns. I may be wrong but sometimes what you don't connect with, doesn't necessarily hurt you. What do I mean with this? Shit never concerns anyone until it hits home. Think about that for a second, and tell me how concerned you've been about any issues that you've heard in the news in the past year or so. The rise of racism, the rise of dividing the country into to two state of minds and or idealisms, issues that affect the poor, the undocumented, the kids, the next generation of this world. consider this too, consider that when you and I were growing up, information did not reach us on the palm of our hands in seconds or miliseconds. Today, this is our kids reality. they know how sad, confused and fucked up our world is, if that is not depressing you, and I'm not trying to get you depressed but more in tune with what may be going on with our kids, then think for a moment about how burdened our kids might feel with a new world on their shoulders into which they soon will join as citizens of what we used to think was the best country to be in. Our kids are not growing up in a fantasy land as we did (or some of us) cause if you grew up disavantaged and poor, well, I guess that was a reality which would be hard to shake off. But the others who did grow up in a good neighborhood, could aspire to one day change the world in this so called great country. But now our kids could have a hard time realising how not so great their future is, will they make it through the next day. Maybe I'm wrong, but would love to hear from others as to what they think might be happening. Discussion is good and if our country can't come together to discuss this crazy time in our lives, then let Steemit be the platform.
