Plastic Straws vs. Cigarette butts

in life •  6 years ago

With all this controversy over plastic straws lately, and California threatening to fine businesses that sell plastic straws, it makes one wonder why no one cares about the cigarette butts all over town, on beaches, and in the ocean.

Now, I am not saying I am against or for the ban on straws. An obvious solution to this problem is to just start using paper straws that break down quickly. Come to think of it, maybe this would be great for the paper industry.

What I am saying, though, is that no one is talking about the cigarette butts. At least no one in my circle is talking about them. Cigarette butts with filters are the largest man made contaminate in the ocean worldwide. Those filters are made of thousands of tiny plastic particles. Perhaps, instead of fining restaurants for selling plastic straws, we should be fining grocery stores and gas stations for selling cigarettes with filters. Forget about the fact that second hand smoke is bad for other humans and air quality. No one really cares about human health anyway. But those cigarette butts are harmful to sea life, so we better get to working on this problem.

Love,
Marie

Thank you for the feedback. I am obviously new at this. The reason I tagged politics, is because the straw subject has been in the news lately and the state of California is trying to pass legislation to ban straws. There are other tags that would have been more relevant.

I am so glad to see someone writing about this issue! I see someone throw one down and i just want to grab the back of their neck and make them pick it up. Liter is liter.

Lol, I totally agree, and if you look down they are all over. It has actually been the reason I chose to keep my shoes on while walking in the sand. Thank you for commenting.
