Hurricane Irma Damage to My Community!

in life •  7 years ago  (edited)

I live in a rural area near a small town in North Central Florida about a hour or so from the Gulf coast of Florida. Hurricane Irma struck this area with ferocity and left substantial damage to our community. Irma's track moved further inland then forecasted by the NHC.

We lost power prior to the height of the storm and the entire area is dark tonight again. Approximately 81 percent of the customers are without power! No gas anywhere! No ice, no water or food is available outside of what provisions people had in their hurricane preps before Irma arrived.

Neighbors cut up this tree that was blocking our road

I can tell you with certainty that it was a harrowing experience, one I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. Hours upon hours of howling winds and torrential rains so loud you could barely hear each other speak. Gusts blew through with such force it seemed as if the house groaned and there was a fear the roof might lift right off!

The house and all the structures survived intact, even the "fortified" chicken coop. The girls are ok, probably have PTSD, but all were happy to leave the coop late this afternoon to free range for a bit. There are many trees down, telephone poles snapped, lots and lots of debris everywhere and water across roads. Some roads are blocked by the authorities while others are impassable due to trees being down.

The good news is there were no injuries or fatalities in our area, Irma was a category 1 hurricane when she passed over us! I would estimate winds were in excess of 80mph at times and sustained in the 60's or 70s.

I would hate to imagine what winds in a category 4 or 5 hurricane would be like and we feel fortunate to have emerged relatively unscathed in comparison to those south of here.

I 75 yesterday afternoon, hardly any traffic northbound which is very unusual. It was backed up for miles before Irma

I took these photos today after the storm passed and wanted to share them with my fellow steemians. I cannot wait for the daily routines of life to return...

Thanks for the little insight to the human side of the news! Glad no-one was harmed in your community.

You are very welcome and we are glad nobody was killed in our immediate area. Thanks for coming by.🐓

Good to hear you and the chickens are OK! Hope they get the power turned back on soon.

Thanks, I was relieved after it was over, the chickens were glad to go free ranging after being literally "cooped up"
Power would be nice🐓

Hope everyone will be ok. That's terrifying to see how fragile we are in contact with the force of nature.

Some list their lives further south, as far as I know no one in our area was injured or killed. Nature is a force that's for certain.🐓

At least you are ok, trees grow back

Yes trees grow back, but it's not just about trees. People lost a lot and animals suffer greatly when these storms hit.

Thank you for sharing. I'm glad you're ok.

Thank you for your concern and for coming by🐓

This is such wonderful news!!!! I am glad to hear that the chickens survived with your family. High winds for hours has got to be draining.....I am so glad you are on the other side of this incredibly scary storm.

Take care @mother2chicks!

It is great news that the girls survived and us. It was unnerving for quite some time. Thank you so much for caring.🐓

Wow, just wow, @mother2chicks. And the girls might have PTSD - sorry, that made me laugh! Thank you for some outstanding photos and a sense of what Irma did to your community. So glad you all came out of it. Love, your friend who's truly grateful to live in a place with great weather 😊😊

Yes my friend Kiligirl the girls May in fact have PTSD it's no laughing matter! Very hard to treat. It is unlikely they will return to their normal egg count. My only hope that they can continue to interact on a social scale. Time will tell.
Got to go for a few. Will get back to you. Love from the state of madness. Ellie Mae🐓🐓

Oh dear, I thought you were kidding! 😱 I didn't mean to make light of your girls. The way you'd described them, I thought they were super-resilient. Hope they get back to themselves soon. Lots of love from this side 💗💗

You are so funny Kiligirl. I was just pulling your leg about the chickens. They are very resilient. Granny and I got a good laugh from your reply. When we get back to normal I will get a chance to sit down and read your latest post. Love ya! Ellie Mae🐓🐓

I'm such an easy target...I'm glad you and Granny got a good laugh. As long as Jed did too! Good luck clearing the trees and other debris. Love you too 😂😂

Haha! Kiligirl . I am still chuckling about that. I think We will include that in the Chicken Gazette. Chicken therapy! Finally went to my Sister's house and had a shower got some ice and gas. Things are starting to return to normal. I am glad you have a good sense of humor! Love Ellie Mae🐓🐓

Careful what you start - you might end up with a thriving business as a chicken therapist, Ellie Mae!! I look forward to that edition of the Chicken Gazette 🤣🤣. I'll bet that shower felt divine...so glad things are starting to return to normal for you...how normal are things these days? Have they managed to clear the streets? Has the power come back? Is the funding starting to flow for repairs to homes and other buildings? Are there enough repair crews for the work? Hope that's not too many questions, but I guess I'm reacting to the reports from the Caribbean on how they're trying to wrap their heads around the aftermath...sending you lots of love 😘😘

OMG! Kiligirl that would be an interesting business. Entertaining too! Don't know how much money/crypto I could make. Probably just make it back in eggs! Lol..

No power yet. Guys are working diligently to get massive trees off the lines. Lots of help from other states and of course the scammers are starting to appear. Listen to the radio a lot while on the road and the elderly people are the most frustrated with the inconviences. Kind of sad, because I would think they would be most prepared.

Love You! Talk soon. Getting closer to normal every day. Your friend. Ellie Mae🐓🐓

I would give anything for a fresh cup of joe right this very minute. None available since the whole town is "powerless". People out yesterday cleaning up their yards, talking to each other. That is the spirit I like to see. We all feel blessed that we are still here.

So glad you are okay. Your description sounds so frightening. I have cousins that live in the Orlando area. They heard those howling winds also! I hope it doesn't take long for life to get back to normal for you!

It's a mess right now, but amazing how fast things come back together. Hope your family in Orlando was unscathed. 🐓🐓

I'm so happy that you all are okay. Goosebumps looking at those photos...Bless you!!

We feel very blessed that everything here at our place was fine. So many people paid dearly. Who knew the wind could be so scary? Thank you for your well wishes. 🐓🐓

Yeah, I couldn't even imagine... :'(

Good to see everyone is well! That's a helluva mess, but it'll be cleaned up before you know it... So happy y'all are okay!

Already the linemen are onto it. Truckloads of them. Yeah! Won't be long. Just a little camping trip. 🐓🐓
