Cuddle Corner

Have you ever visited a zoo or a farm where young children are allowed to pet or cuddle the animals like hamsters, goats, newborn chicks, cute rabbits and maybe piggies? Many of us would have had that fuzzy pleasure when we were young uns or as parents bringing our children for a fun day out.

There are of course some people who think that children should not be exposed to animals other than those we keep as pets at home. The primary reasons are health and safety concerns for not only the children but also for the animals. Children could contract life threatening diseases like E.coli from these petting animals. Animals can be unpredictable, causing a potential risk if a child is accidentally bitten or knocked over. And the animals can become sick or seriously injured through mishandling or being fed unsuitable foods that may cause discomfortpain and suffering.

There will always be an element of risk in whatever children are exposed to; the swing or playground structures can cause serious accidents. Petting zoos or farms are always a hit with children. Some people believe that children learn responsibility and improve development and social skills through interaction with animals. Remember to wash hands with plenty of soap and water after handling animals.
