Thanksgiving Potluck

For the past several years, Thanksgiving is celebrated at a friend's. She has no immediate family living in the same state and she doesn't travel much as she has to take care of her several dogs. She loves to cook and try out recipes and I must add that she is an excellent cook.

Usually, there would be at least eight families at the Thanksgiving celebration that often lasts from late morning to nightfall. It's food galore on the huge kitchen island and food is continuously eaten and replenished. Our friend often cooked up a storm while each family would bring one or more casserole of food. A fabulous potluck and gathering.

The menu is so varied; sweet, savoury, spicy and lots of finger food. We would usually cook our pot of chicken stew, stuffed mushroom, spring rolls or stirfry noodles and arrive early to help out in her kitchen. Our hostess is not too keen on guests bringing food to be cooked in her kitchen. As she is already making so many dishes, she is simply unable to spare her ovens and cooking range except the microwave oven for reheating.

While the adults catch up, the children would play whatever games the hostess have thought up. She also makes sure there are prizes for challenges. She has a huge chest of magnetic block sets, games compendiums and plenty of paper and crayons. One time when the weather was great, the children ran around in her trim huge backyard playing tag and classic obstacle games. So much fun for them. They were really ready to tuck in their dinner after that adrenaline-packed workout.
