The Great Oryx
There she is, standing tall right in front of you. With here black mask covering her grey-cream skin. Staring. She's standing strong with tall dark horns sitting on her head like a crown, showing everyone the queen of the desert that she so proudly is. At the moment she would turn around, kicking up the red sand beneath her feet, takes of and makes her way across the plains of harshness.
It's a harsh world to live in. Unforgiving. You feel the hot dry air against your skin and wonder - how do anything survive.
Early mornings you hear the calls of the animals. A living network with one common goal - Survival. It is a rare sight to see the rains pouring down. A blessing given from Mother nature to those who depend on it. It nurtures and revives. It brings life. You smell the dust lifting from the dead dry ground feeling refreshed and full of life.
Even though the drought overrules these plains, life still goes on.
With the high midday scorching sun finally setting, it kisses the horizon goodnight with a breathtaking view of gold, pink, purple and blue. The darkness slowly but surely creeping up against the sky.
Stand still.
Don't make a noise. Listen. Feel.
In the vast open plains all light you can see are those of the stars scattered against the darkness, next to the silver moon that,s placed high in the sky.
You hear the calls of the jackal - sending shivers down your spine. You feel the cold wind climbing up your skin. Escaping the extreme heat of the day. The howling wind calling to the people who once roamed these lands. Realizing that there is exactly what you though wasn't. Life.
