I always wanted a big family. I had known from a young age that I was born to be a mother.
For some reason I thought I was going to have five girls. Not that I didn't want boys, I just envisioned girls.
Then I fell pregnant, and the need to have a girl disappeared and all I wanted was a healthy baby.
I was however blessed with a daughter. She was perfect! She was also bossy.
Within a few months of learning to talk she started to ask for a baby. Not just any baby though, she wanted a sister. It was both adorable and disconcerting. One can not simply choose the sex of there offspring. A lesson my girl was about to learn, a few times over!
We soon found out we were expecting. She was thrilled. She would point to my tummy and say "sissy"?
Unfortunately for her our next little bundle was a boy. When she made her way into the hospital to meet him, she repeatedly asked if it was a girl. After explaining for the 100th time that he was definitely a boy, she demanded we return him to wherever he came from and bring her a sister.
Luckily her disappointment did not last long and she soon protected that baby as if her life depended on it. Although she loved him dearly, the request for a sister continued.
Then we had number three. By this stage our oldest was 6. She again demanded that we had better be having a girl or else.
Turns out or else was nothing more than a temper tantrum that was soon dispelled by the fact that he made his way into the world on Christmas Eve. Nothing calms an unhappy child like a room full or presents and mass amounts of holiday food!
I had promised my kids a baby by Christmas and I delivered ..literally. But that's another story.
So this brings us to baby number 4. By this stage our oldest was now 8. She understood that we were in no way deliberately bringing home boys just to ruin her dream of a sister. It did not however stop her from wanting one.
So when it came to find out the sex of the baby she demanded to come along. So of we went for the ultrasound only to be told that we were having yet another boy. Her disappointment was palpable.
She turned to the ultrasound technician and demanded that he check again, convinced he was wrong. This continued until his arrival. When, just like with his older brothers the anger and disappointment dissolved into love.
So when I announced that we were having another (she was ten now) I expected the same reaction. But no, not this time. Her age had caught up with her and although i knew she deeply wanted a sister she refrained from showing it.
I went to find out the sex alone. I honestly didn't mind either way. However when I discovered it was a girl I was so excited to tell my daughter.
I will never forget the day I picked her up from school and shared the news with her. "You're getting a sister".
She screamed with delight. Then that was it, she told everyone! Even complete strangers, much to my embarrassment. She was so overjoyed it was hard to be mad with her.
When she arrived our oldest was the first to hold her. She had waited up until 3.30 in the morning for us to return from the hospital (I'm an in and out mum, 4 hrs after there born I make a run for the door) she looked at her baby sister and said "I waited 10 years for you!".
Miss 2 is the most content, happy and intelligent little girl. I owe a lot of that to her big sister. Whenever she is ill or sad, it's her sister that she wants. When she needs a drink or someone to play with, she knows who to turn to.
Even though we have since had another little girl, there bond is just something special. My oldest often refers to Miss 2 as being her own. After having to wait all those years I'll give her that one.
Miss 2, you made your sisters dreams come true and have brought us nothing but happiness and love since the moment you entered this world. I can't wait to see how you grow and I'm sure you will have many surprises for this mumofmany.
A beautiful story and a bond that can not be broken was also born when Miss 2 was, absolutely Devine! I now also understand your @mumofmany username! ❣️

I remember you taking that photo of Miss 12 holding Miss 2 for the first time at some ungodly hour in the morning. Miss 12 (12 now, 10 then) was so tired she could hardly keep her eye's open but she was waiting for you to come home from the hospital until she got her sister.

She was indeed, I actually got a good photo of them the other morning when Miss 2 had woken up before us and Miss 12 must have gone in and collected her up and taken her back to her room, because there they were sound asleep. Just a little bit adorable.

Omg I love this! I'm glad your oldest got her sister finally. As I was reading your post, every time you said it was a boy, I have to admit I felt a bit of disappointment for her too. :)
