Sadness and Sorrow

in life •  7 years ago

Today is a day of sadness and sorrow, a firefighter gave his life trying to protect my province last night. He served the next province over, and was chasing a wildfire that had grown out of control. By all accounts, James Hargrave was a devoted family man, dedicated to his community, and well-loved by those who knew him. He gave his life for other last night.

It's a sad day for everyone who was connected with him in some way, most importantly for his young family. I never met James, but I am connected with him through the extended family of Emergency Services that extends around the world. He did what all of us may be called upon to do, and we cannot let his sacrifice be meaningless. He helped save towns and farms, and stop what could have been a devastating prairie fire.

I will honour James in my own way, and in the way that firefighters and emergency responders have always honoured their fallen; by getting back on the truck. When the tones drop and the pager sounds, I will don my bunker gear and remember my brother who died wearing the same uniform. I will answer the call to protect my community, my friends, and my loved ones by being there on their darkest day.

James Hargrave, 34
Firefighter, Walsh Station
Cypress County (AB) Fire Department
End of Watch: October 17, 2017
