I was looking recently into the Yanny or Laurel discussion, and it made me think a little. In case you didn’t know yet, there is an audio recording going around for some time now that has started a worldwide discussion whether the person is saying Yanny or Laurel. I included the video below for your entertainment which also includes an analysis on why a lot of us hear something different on the recording.
After listening to it myself and concluding it was Yanny, I was wondering why other people hear something different. This made me think that even if something is seen as quite straightforward this is not necessarily the case. One would think that what is audible must be an objective measurement. However, this was not the case, which made me think; A lot of things that may be seen as perfect or ideal by one person may not be the same for another person. Our perspective to a certain issue is often times shaped by our personal circumstances no matter how objectively something appears to be. Different people see or hear different things and has a different perspective on things.
For that reason, it is very difficult to define what is perfect. One person may argue that he is perfect while someone else sees something completely different. Hence, I think we need to respect each other and appreciate the good things we see in others. No one is perfect but we are able to learn from one and other and accept the person for who he or she is.
Do you hear Yanny or Laurel?
