From Blacksmiths To Programmers

Rewind back to in the time of no cars, being a blacksmith was a thing to be. Horse shoe welder's was a top job to have. If you were to ask the people around what to do with your life, being a blacksmith would be one of the top responses you would get.

Let's fast forward to the 1950s. In the 1950s, if you went around telling people you were going to make a living welding horse shoes what response would you get? "Why would you do this? Don't you know most are using cars these days? To go college and get a valuable education."

Now lets fast forward to the present time. If you go around telling people your going to college to get a finance degree what response may you get? "Jack went to college and got that degree, but he is having a difficult time finding a job."

There is something to be said for aligning yourself with the world around you.

I am a programmer by trade. Unlike most programmers, I am not in it for the love of programming rather the job security.

We have now entered the era of the robots. All jobs have been and are being automated by algorithms. The unfortunate truth is computers are more efficient, more accurate, and less prone to complains than humans. For us little guys this sucks. I certainly don't want any part of it, but what is the alternative? Getting Business degrees?

We should all be mindful of the advice we get from the masses. And moreover from the timing of the advice.
