Watching videos recently during my breaks just to relax or well just for the sake of watching and sometimes stumble on heartbreaking, heart muscle straining videos. Typically you would expect to see people trying help, instead, you find them patiently waiting to see what will happen in the end!
Some don't move a muscle and the only evidence you get that they are not paralysed is their occasional gestures or move to find a better view.
Psychology offers an explanation for this though. It is called the bystander effect where individuals are less likely to help out when others are present.
This is because this point what runs through the mind of individuals around are 'well, someone will attend to him', 'I'm not the only one around, let someone else do it', 'what if i wasnt here?', 'it is probably his fault'... It is basically you standing by and doing nothing.
But the bystander effect in my opinion has gone from bad to way terrible. How can you see someone in need for help and instead of bringing out your phone to call for help, you bring out your phone to make a video cause it's gonna get you a million views and trend on Twitter???!
Sometimes these self appointed videographers never try to dial the emergency number.
Or you see someone being bullied or something not just right and you rather keep quiet.
But really, in a situation where you can, you should. You just might save a life or be a blessing. You were most likely at that spot, at that time for a reason. What stops you from dialing emergency number if you suspect or are sure something wrong going on around?
Even if you can't directly proffer a solution, call the position l person(s) or people who can.
I'm not saying you should put yourself in harm's way. Nope! I'm just asking you do the right.
