A boy died after a bullet fell on his head while playing sports with his friends, according to police in Indiana.
The Hammond Indiana Police Department said that on Saturday, at approximately 9:30 p.m., a group of children were playing basketball outside, in the 7300 block of Harrison Avenue.
Suddenly, 13-year-old Noah Inman fell down. Witnesses on the scene believed Inman may have been suffering from a seizure and immediately called an ambulance.
At the hospital, it was learned that the child was struck from a falling bullet that was shot into the sky by someone in the nearby community. Inman flown to Comer's Children's Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, where he later died.
"We want to remind the public that it is never legal to discharge a firearm within city limits. If you own a firearm, it is not to be used as part of a celebration. "We also urge the public to immediately call 911 and report anyone they believe is firing a firearm as part of a celebration.
"We would like to encourage anyone with any information about someone in the South Hammond area shooting off a firearm Saturday evening to please call Detective Lieutenant Mark Tharp at (219) 852-2988 or Detective Sergeant Mark Ferry at (219) 852-2991 with this information," the Hammond Police Department said on Facebook.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's office said that Inman died of a gunshot wound to the head.
The death was ruled a homicide.
