Why we must live in line with our values

There is something I often hear from people around me:

"You’re not normal!"

It's true. I probably don't fit the mold that many consider normal. Honestly, I'm not even sure I want to. It seems the idea of normal has become very limited. Being outside of what is deemed normal raises many questions and discussions.

This is true for various aspects of life, including family structures, gender identities, ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientation, and in my situation, my work life.

When I mention that I’m not busy right now, or when I share that I haven't held a steady job since 2014, I often get strange looks. Some people label me as weird. Very few people, but their comments have a strong impact on me, have even posted hateful remarks on my social media.

This perception does not stem from a lack of effort. I have written eight books, created 450 blog posts, published a weekly list called Søndagslisten for five years, and delivered hundreds of lectures and workshops. For me, that is enough.

Perhaps it's not what’s typically viewed as "normal." But that's not for me to determine. For those who may experience similar feelings, perhaps you're thinking:

"I am not normal. Everyone else appears more successful. I feel out of place. There's something wrong with me."

Put those thoughts aside. Remember that you are unique and special. You are just right as you are.

Do not allow others to define who you are. Trust yourself, your instincts, and those who uplift you. Stay true to your identity.

We need people who are different. I will never accept the idea that there is a single normal way to live or that we must all be identical. In fact, I don't believe normal life exists.

There are only individual lives. Each life is distinct and filled with its own challenges and joys. Yours is no exception. Your life is as particular and significant as you choose it to be.

Stepping outside the restrictive definition of normal can open our eyes to new perspectives. Consider the innovative artist who creates a fresh interpretation of a familiar song, the manager at work who proposes bold and creative ideas, or the neighbor who initiates activities to bring the community together.

We need these unique individuals. The ones who enrich our experiences and help us see the world differently. Just as we value the quieter individuals who provide calm in our hectic lives. And we also appreciate those who fall somewhere in between.

In essence, we need everyone. Our variety and individuality are essential. You do not need to change. Keep being yourself.

Live according to your values. Respect others. Contribute meaningfully. Be authentic. It really doesn't need to be more complicated than that.
