HILLIARD

Jean Hilliard's incredible frostbite

Among the unexplained facts is what happened to J. Hillard. Jean Hilliard, born in 1961 in Lengby, Minnesota, survived a severe night frost of 6 hours after a car accident in Minnesota at temperatures well below freezing. He survived and his recovery was described as "a miracle". On 20 December 1980, Jean Hilliard was involved in a car accident which caused the car to break down at low temperatures.

He went to a friend's house 3.2 km away and passed out in front of the door. Temperatures dropped to -30°C (-22°F) and he was "solidly frozen" at 7am after six hours in the cold. They took her to Fosston Hospital, where doctors said her skin was too hard to pierce with a hypodermic needle and her body temperature was too low to record on a thermometer. His face was waxy and his eyes were vitreous with no response to light. His pulse had dropped to about 12 beats per minute. It has been suggested that, due to the alcohol in his system, his organs have remained frozen, which prevented permanent damage.

Jean, wrapped in a blanket, had violent convulsions and regained consciousness. It was perfectly healthy, mentally and physically, though a little confusing. Even the frostbite slowly disappeared from the legs, to the amazement of the doctor. After 49 days, he left the hospital without losing a single finger and without permanent damage to his brain or body.
