WILL KIDS DRINK CARROT JUICE?... WELL, SOME KIDS WILL

in life •  7 years ago

You may be wondering why @papa-pepper is giving carrot juice to his kids.

Then again, you may not. Some of you may not even realize yet that I am talking about young goats, which are also called kids. Either way, just sit right back and you'll hear a tale.

Back when we traded some of our pigs for some goats and other animals, some of the young bucklings were not doing very well. These young male goats had recently been weaned and were having a rough time adjusting, as is often the case.

They had some pretty bad scours (diarrhea) and their weight was already dropping. We did a number of things to help remedy the situation, and it looks like we will completely win this battle. By doing things like removing all grain from their diet and feeding them dry hay, certain things can be done to help.

CARROT JUICE?

I'll share some more about our basic care for these creatures later, but I wanted to share this one now, since it is so peculiar. Because Beta-carotene can have a greatly positive effect on the immune system and also work to fight against diarrhea, @mobile-joat suggested that I try to get a good dose of Beta-carotene into their system.

Now the diet of goats, like any animals, can be a very delicate issue. Attempting to add the wrong thing into an animal's diet at the wrong time can be potentially fatal for the animal. Anyone who chooses to get involved with animal husbandry has some serious responsibility on their shoulders and the lives of their pets or livestock should not be taken lightly. That said, I am in no way giving any advice about how others should care for their animals, I am just sharing what we chose to do when dealing with an issue that was threatening the lives of some of our animals, and how it worked out for us.

I first tried offering a little raw carrot to our kids, but they had no interest in it whatsoever. I then contemplated other options. Personally, I like a more natural, drug & chemical free, organic approach to raising animals, so I thought about trying some carrot juice. For an added boost, I added a bit of electrolyte supplement which also helps when goats are experiencing scours because it helps keep them hydrated during this dangerous time.

When I placed the bit of carrot juice into the bucket with the electrolytes and offered it to the kids, I had no idea what to expect. They had wanted absolutely nothing to do with the whole, raw carrot and I had no reason to think that this would work out any better.

They immediately came over to check it out, and were soon fighting one another to gulp down as much as they could. I was thoroughly impressed. These kids loved it!

Soon their muzzles were tinted orange. Not only were they getting some sort of liquid to help hydrate them, they were getting a good dose of Beta-carotene and electrolytes too.

They even enjoyed it so much that they began to lick their lips to finish it up! While not every kid would do this, these goat kids did. I honestly think that the @little-peppers would do just as good though too.

In about a minute after offering the carrot juice to the kids, they had mostly finished all of it. I didn't offer them the whole bottle, but they had what I considered to be a good, yet safe, amount. They are currently adding on some weight and doing better, but we are still monitoring them and keeping them on dry hay for now, until this completely passes.

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Wow, Luar biasa sekali @papa-pepper, Ini baru pertama sekali saya melihat kambing mau minum jus wortel, Sepengetahuan saya Kambing ini binantang yang sangat sensitif bila berhubungan dengan makanan, Tidak sedikit pula kambing yang mati hanya karena perut kembung akibat salah makanan, Ternyata Kambing suka juice wortel, Terima kasih @papa-pepper atas informasinya, dan saya akan mencobanya di kampung halaman saya :)

Good thinking trying out carrot juice. But how did yo come about it. I mean, carrot of all while choosing to go natural? And it worked!!. wow! You must really be experienced in animal husbandry.

here i am again, good post love the pictures.. upvote

@papa-pepper Very nice post. The first picture is just adorable :) Best wishes! Up vote!!

I would have thought they'd go for the carrots first and not the juice. It just goes to show, there's no figuring goats ;-)

Me too, but at least I had options! Thanks @trevor.george!

Thankfully they did! I appreciate the comment @arrliinn!

are you sure they did not have worms? many times the problems start from there, we are advised to when your goat had babys ( i know that now is not the case, but when... ) Give mama goat antiworms pill or drink, just after the delivering, that way she will pass it on by breastfeed to her kids, normally kids you are only allowed to tread with it after 2 months but coming from their mum it goes in a very safe way. Goats are so funny ! love them.

They may have, but we covered those bases too using other methods.

like?

good vd

you say what?

thank you

Glad to hear it is improving the herd @papa-pepper... 😊😊😊

Thanks @planet-green. I think that your posts are great and you cover some good topics!

Awe that orange muzzle is too cute. Would carrots/carrot juice work on humans as well? I'm trying to learn more natural ways of healing ourselves and this is a tasty one.

I think so. They sometimes give it to malnourished women when they deliver babies, and the stuff I picked up is actually intended for human consumption. As some say, "Food is our medicine," but too often these days it seems more our poison.

Sure does. I've grown up drinking carrot juice and tomato juice. I never knew it was good for you, I just liked it. I'll keep it in mind.

Wow I appreciate your organic method @papa-pepper . I thought its for man at first since I also tried to blend carrots for my consumption. Tnx

Thanks @jacoblayan!

It doesn't surprise me that the kids like carrot juice. I think they turned down the whole carrot because it didn't smell as good as when you juice them. You know when you're sick some things just smell appetizing enough. When we had our goats and sheep they loved bananas. They would eat them off the trees but really preferred that we peel them and feed them piece by piece! lol Glad to hear the kids are doing better. BTW human kids like carrot juice mixed with orange juice.

Good theory about why they went for the juice and not the raw carrot. It seems logical to me!

I love carrot juice It's pretty interesting that goats love carrot juice. It seems like they do cause they crink it all up. looking forward to your next post. I appreciate you taking the time to share with us . You have my upvote
