The Story of My Tattoos

A fellow steemian and tattooed soul, @foxyspirit, is having a #steemit contest in relation to our tattoos. You can go here to get all the details on how to enter.

The first tattoo that I will share is a quarter-sleeve on my left arm and it is a custom piece done by an amazing artist from South Georgia. It took two 4 hour sessions and embodies several important aspects of my life. The butterfly represents my daughter and the Japanese character within the archway translates to "daughter". I choose a mainly traditional Japanese style to pay homage to their culture and rich history with tattooing. The chrysanthemum represents the blooming of life to remind me that another spring with come and with it new hope and new opportunities. The ocean has been a part of my life since birth and I want traditional Japanese stylized waves. Lastly the tattoo is framed by storm clouds to remind me to be ever vigilant in my dealings and to maintain my work ethic. Another secret tidbit is that it is actually a cover up piece from a bad decision at 18....lol

1/4 Sleeve on my left arm.

Next, we hop over to the other arm and share my tribal style bear and infinity symbol. The bear has always been a symbolic animal to me and the infinity symbol is a reminder to eternally remain true to myself and my nature, the bear This tattoo was, like many are, a transitional tattoo. It was between major life experiences and I needed to mark it with something to remind me of my nature.

On my left chest above my heart, I have a koi and Japanese symbol with a bit of waves. The koi represents my wife, as she is a pisces, and the symbol means "artist" because my wife is an artist and art teacher. What better place to have the representation of my wife than over my heart?

Koi over my heart.

Lastly, on the top of my left and right back I have two smaller tattoos. The one on my left is a Japanese symbol for "poet" to represent the poetry I write and the creative nature of who I am. The right one is a simple, antique style key to also represent my wife, who will eternally have the key to my heart.

There you have it. A short pictorial history of who I am told through the medium of tattoos. I am a father, husband, poet, bear and I adore tattoos. Some of these are not as great as they were when I got them, but some are over 20 years old as well. Thanks for learning a bit about who I am.

Awesome post man and great ink. I may have to join in on the fun of this one. I lost count on how many tattoos I have, but if I did this I guess I would have to figure out that number. The good thing is that all of my tattoos have a reason and story behind them.

Oh man, you should really do it. The only thing that has slowed me down is money and having them show. I'm almost where I need to be career-wise and then its full sleeves and legs!!! lol

My goal is to eventually have one full body tattoo.

You and me both! I want to be mistaken as a member of the yakuza!

Some great ink, Papa. This contest seems like a very cool idea.

I thought it was a great idea and jumped at the chance to show of my studly bare skin!

Oh I love this! Charming and fierce. The meaning behind your tattoos are beautiful and amazing. I really like the meaning of chrysanthemum. It is a very deep tattoo.
It is like you said 'unique way to get to know your fellow steemians'. Thank you for taking part of the competition, for sharing and getting to know a personal side of you xx I respect that :)

Thanks for having such a great contest. I really enjoyed writing this up!

Wow, I love that each of your tattoo tells a story. I'm pretty sure it's a great conversation starter!

I like to think that those tattoos keep you grounded, focusing inwards towards yourself, and also towards the people closest to you.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment and support. It definitely is a great conversation starter and keeps me always thinking of why and how I got them.

Very cool post. My tattoos are actually scars where I electrocuted myself...I got a pretty gnarly one from Poseidon's trident one night when we were both drunk.

Awesome post! Some of my tattoos aren't holding up that well, but like you, they're old. I need to get a coverup of my bad choice 18 year old tattoo as well, if I can ever design something I want.

I like reading about the stories behind people's tattoos, so thanks for sharing.

I had started writing posts with the stories of my tattoos a few months ago when I first got to steemit and then totally forgot to finish the series!

Finish it now and enter! To me, the story of one's tattoo is their true story. The story they share with a privileged few, their marked brothers and sisters. Tattoos usually tap into the truest of our natures, the darkest of our secrets, and the greatest of our triumphs! Thanks for taking the time to come by and leave such a sincere comment. I've read some of your posts and know you can't have much free time outside of creating such quality content! Seriously, thanks!

Nice! Thanks for sharing your stories behind the art.

I have get to get my first... I will know when its right.

Absolutely, you should never, never rush a tattoo. When it is right everything will line up the way it should!
